Modelmaster Decals - was bad news - now good news!

Well, being self employed or running a small business is damn hard work. I have had good service from modelmaster over many years. Actually the same goes for most of the other small businesses that cater for the specialist end of modelmaking.

If any of the small businesses in that trade decide to slow down a bit and deal with stuff on a bit slower basis then thats fine with me, I do in some ways look back to the days when you sent a letter with a list ( cheque enclosed, with some firms I would trust even an open cheque ) and then a small parcel arrived a few weeks later.

So if anyone in the trade decides to just potter on and work at their speed rather than the one click instant world we now live in I for one am fully in support of that.

And I thought I was cynical.  Has it occurred to anyone that the guy wanted to retire from a life denying his own wants and needs to sell stuff to us at prices that would hardly make him a rival to Bill Gates, and then changed his mind in response to our reaction to it.

Come on, guys, cut him a bit of slack!

I am glad his stuff is to be available for a while yet, but suggesting this is a marketing stunt is a bit much.

Agreed, but take it as a warning, that one day in the not to distant future, he WILL be retiring.

No doubt retiring at some point but it still seems like one attempt after another the last year to gain a raft of orders quickly, what next - an announcement of a hefty price increase only to be followed by a week later an explanation that following further consideration no price increase and some reductions?

Obviously you're entitled to your view, although it's not one I share.

I'd actually be quite prepared to pay a bit more for the products, should need arise, again merely my personal view.

And that's fine by me too - provided they make it very clear on their website that the customer shouldn't expect delivery anytime soon.

It's not that long since I ordered and paid for a couple of products from what appeared to be a normal supplier's website and got no acknowledgement, so I emailed a couple of days later asking if they'd got the order OK.  No response again and payment still not taken.  A week later I noticed the payment had left my bank, so I emailed again saying I'd find it helpful to know when I might expect my order to leave them.  In due course I got an irate email saying how they both had full time jobs, the business took up a lot of their spare time, they had shows to attend at weekends and a little patience on my part would not go amiss!

No clue whatsoever on their website that I was dealing with anything other than a normal online supplier.

Hi just wondered if anyone had recently ordered and received their order from Modelmaster?

Reason I ask is I ordered a couple of sets of nameplates plus some numbers on the 05/03/18 which has not yet been received.

I have left a phone message (no reply) and two emails. One email was replied too (22/03/18) saying Jim would be back at work after an accident and would quickly catch up with orders.

My concern is it may have been sent and lost in the post.......email on the 11/04/18 hasn't been answered when I asked what the situation was re the order.

Thanks Ian.

I received an order for transfers yesterday that I had placed over two weeks ago. They sent me an e-mail to confirm the order had been posted.

Thanks for the reply Andrew. So if an email is sent advising of dispatch I can assume my order has not yet been sent.

Had excellent service from Jim a couple of times over the last two months....

Phone calls worked well

For what its worth, this guy is responsible for the worst (by a country mile) internet purchase experience I have had a couple of years ago. (Yes, it was that memorable!). Took order and money, heard nothing for months before insisting on a response elicited a gruff response about waiting for stock to come in. Rude, arrogant and entitled are terms I would use about this seller.

Im sure his fans will be quick to defend him, but I must speak as I find. Never again......

I tried to get in touch with them a long while ago without success, I wanted some bus decals but as the website doesn't have pictures on I thought the easiest would be to send a photo of what I wanted to make sure I got the right ones. I understand that the phone is easier for them, but a picture tells a thousand words, I just gave up in the end and it's in the unfinished projects box.

My experience was pretty similar, Rude, arrogant and entitled are exactly the words I would use too...

1st time I placed an order and weeks passed. I followed up and got a rude email saying that they had been posted and I was  out of line wasting his time... Transfers did come a week later with a postmark several days AFTER the date of his email.  2nd time was several years later and I gave him another chance with one of the xx% off sales... sadly, same story, just ruder and nastier. I never did get everything I had paid for.

It's one thing to get poor service, it is something else entirely when a vendor just blatantly lies to you - and not just once

Strange how people's experiences can be so different; I have bought from Modelmaster over many years and have never had a problem, indeed on one occasion when I messed up an order myself I received a phone call to sort things out. I must also speak as I find.

Hi all,

I've always spoken as I foound regarding Modelmaster and how they operate.

Like Caradoc - I've never had a problem that wasn't easily resolved. Like when I ordered a selection of N Gauge decals instead of the oo gauge ones! That was a p'phone call to sort out and corrected order arrived within a few days.

Those of you who have subscribed to the Modelmaster News letter will know that the latest edition states that Jim is almost up to date with ourders. Some nameplate orders are still delayed but may be coming to you over the next few days as a big delivery from the etcher has been recieved and orders from it are being picked and packed and may well have gone to the Post Office this morning.

So - If you have outstanding orders and don't get them in the next week - Give Jim a call to see what's happened.

Thanks

I don’t have much cause to order direct from Modelmaster, my model shops of choice stock them, but on the occasions when I have placed orders, the only issue has been items out of stock which have taken a few weeks to fulfil.

On each occasion this has happened, the stock items were received in good time and the remainder followed with no additional charge for postage. Communication has been sufficient to keep me satisfied that it hadn’t been forgotten.

I've now been waiting nearly 8 months for my order, despite the fact the website says that it has been delivered.  When I 'phoned I was told that it would be sent in a couple of weeks, but I was told that last time I 'phoned (probably in March or April), so I'm not hopeful.

Sounds like something has gone adrift in transit.

I had a big order from him two or three months ago, it took a couple of weeks (which is longer than usual) but had 11 or 12 different items, some if not all being made to order. I was very happy with the service and quality of product, and that has been my experience with him for over twenty years now.

Recently ordered a batch of numberplates from them, which hadn't arrived by the estimated delivery time.  A phone call elicited a friendly and re-assuring response in a cheerful enough Scottish accent from, presumably, Jim, the reason being that, allegedly, one of the plates was out of stock and was waiting for a new production run.  The entire order arrived 10 days later, and I am happy with the price and quality; it is possible that the quoted delivery time (10 working days) is a bit ambitious, but this is not for me to say.

The coverage of GW or WR numberplates is very comprehensive and I doubt can be matched by anyone else.  A trawl of the website yesterday revealed that any Tondu 56xx is covered (haven't checked other classes) for the early 50s; no mean achievement for a relatively obscure corner of South Wales.  I will continue to use them with confidence, but will not expect deliveries in 10 working; I'd suggest leaving it 3 weeks and phoning Jim, and telling him you're going to leave it another 2 weeks before phoning him back.  This gentle prodding seems to get things moving well enough!

Ian

Placed an order December 2021 not arrived yet ( not holding my breath) ,

tried to contact on mobile number get “ mailbox full “ message.

Very strange but a previous order was completed in 10 days with emails saying order received, money taken, order processed and order dispatched.

lack of communication is very very frustrating.

cheers Malc.
