Another Challenge ?

When I see they have written 'specialize' not the correct for UK 'specialise' and don't notice the grammatical error of 'old rounder' instead of 'all rounder' (which is what they actually meant) then it shows shoddy attention to detail and, therefore low production values.

Railway modelling is not a competitive hobby in my book.

It certainly used to be. I've judged modelling competitions, and seen cups awarded at shows for 'best layout' etc. For instance, Modelrail Scotland used to have an extensive modelling competition with a couple of showcases of models. True, competitions seem to have declined in recent years, replaced by a "who can find the most faults in a new ready-to-run model" competitiveness, I suspect. In the end its still one person passing judgement on another's efforts. Unfortunately, American computer spellcheckers and predictive texting are the bane of modern writing, and and no matter how well read something is, those unwanted corrections can get through. Only yesterday I was proof-reading an annual publication when I noticed that the word 'battened' had appeared as 'battered'. On further checking, it has appeared as 'battered' for the past two years! I don't think Steve or I said anything about the hobby not being fun. It's introducing the competetive element to it I don't like, or see the need for. Nothing to do with being "big grown up serious modellers"

Indeed it could - IF it was showcased rather differently, without being a competition pitting people against each other.

As for your Class 309 question, I'll have to pass on that; I had to Google it just to see what one was. Certainly not my type of train, Region or Era, or even to a large extent Country of interest. :P :jester:

I suppose I could always broaden my horizons and look a wee bit past the GER OLE EMUs.

Well, given that it is a WIDE church of a hobby perhaps an "anything goes" bun fight competition could be encouraged bearing in mind we would all have to follow the HSE requirements throughout the challenge.

No 'cos nobody expects them to come to a final decision. So much for ruthless efficiency eh?

I think you are missing the obvious solution here.

Park the coach / unit/ whatever behind a platform - that way it doesn't matter what gubbins is or isn't below the coach body.

For the open track, have a continuous small hedge or stone wall just in front of the track.

Hi Stu

Have you been filming for the BBC in a nudist camp?

Absolutely. Then when I need to know something seriously obscure about the Soo Line's DT-6-6-20s (Ex-DSS&A, naturally) I'll know just who to come to. :good: ;)

Oh and while we're on You Tube videos, how about "Installing DCC the American Way"?

Now that looks likes someone having fun.

The winner will of course be someone with a really pathetic backstory who  only got into modelling because it allows him to look after his widowed, frail mother, and how she loves having him home, even though everywhere she looks are trains, because 'e's my lifeline.'

Or it will be some arch feminazi who got into the hobby to prove that girls are just as good as boys and proves it by showing that she can actually make DCC work first time!

I believe consideration has been given to the Semi Final venue and this is one which has been chosen

together with the judges and their little helpers....

The ultimate winner/s will get a chance for their layout to be transported on the next available NASA Space Shuttle and placed for infinity here.....

Thereby ensuring their layout will top any records broken to date.

I do hope they'll take a cue from C4's recent Highland lark. All competitors will need to wear a lifejacket because there's a sink in the corner next to the tea/coffee.

None of this matters to Me anymore, as I have received a "like" rating  for My post on P1 of this topic from none other than Jenny Kirk,  author, Interweb model railway personality and as of recently, star of the small screen.

This is the highlight of My time on RMWeb and I feel truly humbled to have come to the attention of  such an Icon of stage internet and screen.

Eat my dust all you other wannabes :D

JENNY LIKED MY POST !!!!  :boast:

Just to follow up on my earlier post, I have found out some more details from the Researcher:

- The filming will be done during May and June, you need to be available for 9 days.

- You need to form a team of 6 people, they are looking for 12 teams, all over 18 years of age.

Unfortunately both of the above criteria rule me out and realistically mean that it is most suited to be retired club members.

They definitely are not looking to portray the hobby as nerdy, and were at pains to point out they want to show the creativity and quality of railway modelling. I wish them well but think unfortunately the attendees on the program will reinforce the stereotypes due to the restrictions on time etc.

Sh#te. That's me out then as there is no way any of my stuff would be of quality or in any way creative and I'm not a Club Member but I am retired, in fact I'm always tired. perhaps that's my problem? Must see the G.P and discuss my metabollock  meltabloi meltableis metabolism levels.
