D&S Models

I know D&S ceased trading some time ago. From memory following the decision of Dan Pinnock to "Semi-retire"?

I noticed the other day that D&S un-made kits are commanding a pretty decent premium on EBay. So the question is...

Why has no-one picked up the masters? Does Dan still hold them?

I think a number of the cast whitemetal wagon kits ended up as 51L products, the stuff I'm thinking of was the etched coaches (particularly the NER ones) and etched signal box windows. All great products and judging by the prices on EBay there is a dormant demand for them.

Hi,

D&S kits were the panacea for us east coast modellers with pre-grouping or secondary line interests.

I believe that Danny still sells his 7mm kits, although his 4mm range is not marketed. I know that he sold off some or all of the 4mm cast kits to Adrian Swain and these are available as long as the moulds last. I understand that the future of the 4mm etched range is still under consideration.

I'm sure that Danny is fully aware of the ebay prices commanded by his kits. These prices indicate that there is still a healthy demand. Happily, I've still got enough to keep me going for a few years. After that the abyss?

Some of the 4mm kits are still produced occasionally in short runs for some of the specialist societies (the GCRS, for example). If ABS did get all the cast kits, precious few have been released and those which went to 51L were before the 4mm range was run down, I believe.

I'd love to see the range available again, but other people are now stepping into the breach.

Given the number of the GER coaches that turn up (relative to the number of GER area layouts you actually see), the premium on these is somewhat surprising. BTW, I don't think Adrian picked up more than a handful (those he wanted).

It would appear that unbuilt D&S kits are like a new form of currency, to be endlessly traded.....

Indeed a drawer full of them and some Portescap motors and i'd be quite rich!

I know Adrian wanted to tweak the kits he got a bit before release but he does have a massive range anyway currently available. That coupled with the recent health problems he had probably mean its a while until they make it to market.

The 4mm L&NWR kits went to London Road Models (where else). These include the 10T brake van, which has new etched parts to make it easier to build. It can also be built in NLR and L&NWR Ballast Brake versions.

Despite this, old D&S versions of the kit usually sell on Ebay for more money than a new LRM one. Are people stupid or genuine collectors of unbuilt D&S kits?

Interestingly, very few of the etched L&NWR 6 wheel lugage or milk vans pop up on Ebay.

I suppose you could say it's like a form of the old games we used to play with Trump Cards. Only, this version involves money as well. Bet there's a few out there who are trying to collect one unbuilt sample of everything that D&S ever made.

Oh the power of the web to disinform - once again.sad.gif

Dan is alive and well and still developing new items, but in 7mm scale. The cast kits made their way variously to Adrian Swain (ABS) and London Road Models but I believe that some might have gone elsewhere. Dan very sensibly has retained the masters for his 4mm scale etched kits and from time to time it's possible that batches might appear. Certainly those commissioned by the line societies do!

Dan does tend to concentrate on the complete kits, so he doesn't always have the packs of parts and odd items like he used to.

I've suggested to Dan that he should do limited production runs of the 4mm kits and put them up on Ebay - and then offset the cost of his 7mm kits with the mad prices he could obtain. I could get a 7mm kit BOGOF at least. laugh.gif

Despite the ridiculous prices being paid for the steam crane on Ebay and wildly inaccurate information regarding D & S the steam crane is still available from Danny from time to time.

I purchased two from him not so long ago.

Good news for GER 4mm scale modellers.

Speaking to Dan Pinnock yesterday evening (and he has agreed for me to add this note on the Forum) he has confirmed he will be re-introducing some of his 4mm range of GER carriage kits. Depending on demand, this may extend to re-introduction of certain other stock - as usual drop Dan a letter for anything specific as he is not on e-mail (usual courtesy of an SAE if you require a reply) - or via this thread, as I do speak with Dan on a regular basis.

Dan is in the early stages of building a 4mm layout of Newport Station on the Cambridge main line - need one say more! He would welcome any help with photos etc of the station.

Regards

Paul

Jonathan

Dan is currently putting together a list for the next issue of the GERS News, which I'll also copy to this Forum thread.

Any particular specific "wish list"?

Paul

Horseboxes, horseboxes, horseboxes..... from the last list of his I have, the 32' van and CCT and the restaurant car (DS131) would also be of interest.

The Y6 would also be a favourite I'm sure, especially now Jim McGeown has stopped doing his.

The 6 wheel coaches aren't of so much interest to me but they also seem to fetch a premium on Ebay so someone must want them.

Did I mention horseboxes? The GE one and especially the LNER Dia 4 and 5 are much missed. I'd be looking at half a dozen of those for Thurston.

The Horse Boxes I concur with - especially the LNER ones...

Any GCR stuff would be nice - mind I know the GCRS has been getting some done but that means joining them....

There would probably be other tasty morsels but I honestly cannot remember.

Dan did do such a lot of nice stuff...................... :icon_thumbsup2:

I was trying to restrict myself to the GE list and useful LNER prototypes. Pretty well anything Dan wants to do would be of interest at least.

What do I do? Get a second job or sell the children?

My list doesn't have those diagrams of horsebox but I'm not sure what year it's from.
