Withdrawn hydraulics being towed to Swindon

I know a large number of withdrawn Class 22, 35, 42 and 43 hydraulic's were stored at Bristol St Philips Marsh before heading to Swindon for scrapping but was that just a collection point for loco's in the Bristol area or further afield?  I know that when several withdrawn Class 52's were brought up from Laira, I saw several of them passing through Bristol Temple Meads station and I assume they headed straight onto Swindon without stopping.

Most of the hydraulics stored at Bristol Phillips Marsh were Bristol allocations,I remember Cardiff Canton having a withdrawn Hymeks stored on the back of the shed before going to Swindon and Teds stored as well before they got sold.

Old Common had stored withdrawn Warships and Hymeks on shed as well before moving to Swindon.

Are you sure about 6339 at SPM in Oct 71 Brian? It was still officially in traffic then.

Regards

Mike

From my notes, I have the following storage / withdrawal dates for the Cl.22s recorded at St. Phillips Marsh on 23/10/1971 - allowing for the Western Region's love of 'two weeks ending' or 'period ending'.

23rd. October, 1971

St. Phillips Marsh

6310 - 27/03/1971 at 82A

6315 - 22/05/1971 at 84A

6319 - xx/04/1971 at 84A, Reinstated 08/05/1971, then withdrawn again 11/09/1971

6320 - 22/05/1971 at 82A

6322 - 03/10/1971 at 84A

6323 - 22/05/1971 at 82A

6327 - 22/05/1971 at 82A

6328 - 17/07/1971 at 84A

6330 - 23/09/1971 at 84A

6331 - 27/03/1971 at 82A

6334 - 03/10/1971 at 84A

6337 - 21/10/1971 at 84A

6339 - 03/10/1971 at 84A, Reinstated 06/11/1971, Stored 31/12/1971, Withdrawn 01/01/1972

6340 - 22/05/1971 at 84A

6348 - 24/07/1971 at 84A

6354 - 22/05/1971 at 82A

.

These notes suggest  6339 - was withdrawn initially on 3/10/1971 at 84A; reinstated on 06/11/1971; then stored 31/12/1971, and withdrawn with the other survivors the following day, 01/01/1972

My notes suggest I previously recorded 6339 stabled at Exeter St. Davids on Sunday 22/08/1971, together with 6330, 6334, 6337 and 6338.

However, I shall turn out the notebook I had with me and check.

I also visited St. Phillips Marsh on 1st. January, 1972 (my 16th birthday no less) and the following were recorded;

1st. January, 1972

St. Phillips Marsh

808, 819, 822, 831, 833, 839, 843, 854, 855, 857, 861, 867, 868, 869,

6308, 6318, 6319, 6322, 6323, 6328, 6330, 6334, 6337, 6348,

7002, 7051, 7067, 7078,

Some of the locos recorded on 1st. January, 1972 were not 'officially' withdrawn until the 'period ending 8th. January,1972'.

The R.O. records 6339 as being back at St.Phillips Marsh again on 09/01/1972, having been withdrawn for the second time on 1st. January 1972.

From 'the notebook of justice' - a trip from Cardiff - Bristol on Saturday, 23rd. October, 1971.

.

We travelled out on the 16:20hrs Cardiff - Bristol TM for the princely sum of 40p !

.

Not only was it cheaper in the early evening, but we could avoid the BTP who later took to patrolling SPM in an effort to nab 'one for the month' because some spotters took a bit more than the numbers !

.

And, of all those dumped hydraulics, I only copped 6319, but note the "Railair Express Parcels" converted Derby Suburban (W51137 + W51150) set was also at SPM. The gap suggesting I didn't note down the two GUV centre cars W86174 and W86572,
