Part of Newton Abbot Works facing demolition

Recommended Posts

Sadly it looks like another piece of our railway heritage is to be lost. A planning application has been approved to demlish the C&W shed, formerly part of Newton Abbot works, to build an Aldi supermarket. Whilst you have to be realtistic that not everything can be saved, it does seem a bit uneccessary in this case.

There does seem to be an online petition going (for what it's worth).

The petition was duly signed when it was mentioned  in one or two other threads.

Sadly the game is up for that shed now, I fear. The planning suits at Teignbridge DC voted to demolish it the other night anyway, the historic railway heritage for which they hold a large measure of responsibility notwithstanding.

It's not as if Newton Abbot needs another supermarket, it really doesn't.

It's all about corporate greed.

Some decisions in this country would have had other nationalities elsewhere manning the barricades already, yet we simply shrug and make another cup of tea.

Sad news indeed.

I feel it is time to have a more focused push on reclamation of key features by the whole railway preservation movement.

That doesn’t mean silos, each preserves railway doing their thing, but a real national effort. From features such as doors and windows to particular shapes of bricks and other decorative masonry, soon there will be a tricky balance of being authentic or having funds to even start the project.

Storage would be an issue, but this may be where a lottery bid comes in, with support of various heritage and lobbying groups?

A bit of a rant, but with the demise of signal boxes and other key features, I think there needs to be a concerted effort.
