Kylestrome – 2mm scale 2FS

I’ve been experimenting with various photographs, in an attempt to provide a convincing backscene for the layout, and I’ve printed out this version, which comes closest to what I had in mind. The main difficulty with this scene, apart from it being fictional, was getting the distant shore at just the right height in relation to the viewing angle, which itself is not fixed.

The mock-up was printed out on 14 sheets of A4 plain paper and taped together. At 128cm x 43cm it’s quite small compared to the three and a half meter long backscene on my 4mm layout. The actual print will be made by a specialised online poster print company, on thick paper with a matt lamination.

The photos also show the new lighting, with 2800 lumens of diffused 6500K LED light, and the side screens that hide the extreme edges of the scene. If it proves to bright, it is dimmable.  :sungum:

PS. The word ‘backscene’ seems to be another of those ‘model railwayisms’. According to the Oxford dictionary the word doesn’t exist, and in the theatre they call it a ‘back drop’.  :scratchhead:

The scene will look very atmospheric David. Perhaps a bit late to be making this observation, but I wonder if the scenery is a bit centrally symmetric? Perhaps that is the intention, but maybe the composition would be more interesting if the ramp into the sea was shifted left a bit. It all lines up too well at the moment.

Tim,

Thanks for your observations. I might still make some adjustments to the scene, especially as someone else recognised its location and I had intended it to be a bit more anonymous. The mountains will still be between the corners because, as I discovered on my 'big' layout, it's better to have valleys in the corners. Mountains and hills on an inward curve look a bit strange from some angles.

If anyone is actually following this thread (?) they may be wondering if there has been any progress made with it lately. The answer is not much, mainly due to the acquisition of a new plaything and the coincident spell of ‘warm’ weather this summer.

I have finally pensioned off my steel framed Pinarello, after 22 years of loyal service, and have succumbed to this 7.9 kilo creation made of aluminium and carbon fibre. To the non-cyclists amongst you, this has been a transition similar to changing from an MGB to a Ferrari, or waking up 10 years younger! Put another way, enjoying it has put modelling into second place, at least until it starts raining again. Incidentally, This photo also has some railway interest. The farmer has used old concrete sleepers to build the fence around this field.

I haven't completely forgotten about Kylestrome, though. I have also had a spot of luck finding a brand new blue Class 37/4 on eBay, which has been split from the ‘Highlander’ train set. Here it is straight out of the box. It is a bit too recent for my ca. 1969 operating period but I’m a sucker for the large arrow blue livery. I must say that Graham Farish (Bachmann) have come an awful long way since the days when I started modelling – this loco looks absolutely superb. It came DCC fitted and is very, very smooth without any running-in.

Normal service will resume when ‘mudguard’ weather returns.

Nice one David - swap out that chip for a sound fitted one and then there’s no turning back

Pete,

I have enough of a problem getting decent sound into my 4mm locos. I think I'll save myself the trouble in 2mm, thanks.

Are those the Association bufferstop etches? If they are, a nice touch as it was photos of the examples at Kyle of Lochalsh that I used in designing them.

Yes, they are your kits and they have saved me a lot of work, not having to anneal rail to make them from scratch. They're surprisingly robust too. I've caught them a couple of times with my sleeve without damage.

It’s just over a year since the last update from this small backwater on the Sottish west coast, and things are slowly moving on …

One of the reasons why this layout has not been progressing much is that I didn’t have anywhere safe, and dust-free, where I could store it. That situation has now changed with the appearance of a carrying case which I have tailor-made to carry Kylestrome and most of its ancillaries. Despite all of my efforts to keep the weight down to a minimum, the total weight has come out at a little over 11 Kilos. This is just on the verge of being too heavy to carry any distance hence the addition of some small furniture casters which should help me with transporting the layout, should there be a need to. ;)

Obelisk.jpg.a6f91e39c1de30fa39dc3f773c762fcb.jpg

This strange obelisk suddenly appeared in my living room …

I looked at the possibility of getting a proper ‘flight case’ made but that would have weighed 11 Kilos without the layout! This is just a simple plywood box, painted black, with case fittings bought from an online shop.

Case-2.jpg.2b7ee0164a84bf51c9872ef55c22a179.jpg

The bottom is fitted out with locating blocks for various bits and pieces. On top of these are laid the three flat sections of the backscene.

Here you see the fiddle yard, lighting unit and layout which are a nice snug fit so that nothing falls about. The layout still requires end plates to stop it moving up and down (not to mention, a whole lot of work to finish it!).

Somewhat of a minimum space odyssey then?

I've definitely found that keeping a portable layout in an enclosed box pays dividends in keeping everything clean and fresh. I expect you've found the same with Chapel Wharf.

Yep, Chapel Wharf is still as clean and fresh as the day it was born. The two layouts are not equally portable, though. Whereas the "Dwarf" is well within BA's cabin baggage limit, this one will have to travel by train if it gets invited out.

Those are a work of art . You don’t fancy doing some in 4mm do you?

Surely the carrying case(s) for a 2FS Highland layout should, by tradition, be guitar shaped?

It may not be guitar shaped, but it does make a very good cajón (percussion instrument) when it's empty.

PS. I don't think the speakers would be big enough for all that bass!

Are you flying this over to the 60 years show David?

That would have been nice, but no.

I would certainly like to bring the layout over, when it's finished, but it would have to be an epic train journey because it is too big for airline hand baggage. I'd also like to wait and see what international train services look like next year. ;)

Exhibiting British-based layouts in continental Europe and continental-based layouts in the UK may well become all but impossible from next January. Unless the UK and the EU remain in a Custom's Union, which given the recorded thoughts of chairman Cummings seems very unlikely, each layout will need a carnet de passage des Douanes, effectively an insurance policy that says that if you don't return the layout to its home base the insurance company will pay all the import duties which become due. The carnets don't come cheap.
