Edwardian
Well, James now has the link to order the locomotive portion of 'Derwent', and the tenders will be following soon. It'll be a while before the loco is available for sale, however, but it will happen. Brilliant. Thank you
sem34090
Just a note to anyone looking at buying through my shapeways shop - some of the prices are a bit high, so I'd like to clarify that I've only added about £1-£2 as the markup.
RMweb Premium Annie Posted March 10, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 10, 2018 £20 for 6 metal wheels doesn't sound expensive to me Sem.
sem34090
May need to, erm, up the price then! Want to remain competitive though.
RMweb Gold BlueLightning Posted March 10, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 10, 2018 I would say prices look about right! Alan Gibson replacement wheel sets for 0-6-0's are £20 for all wheels and axels. so I would say you are at the right price point! Gary
sem34090
I may increase the markup slightly then... On another note, who's going to own up to being my first customer?!
MikeTrice
How do you envisage the wheels being used? From what I can see they have a quite crude profile and there is no obvious way of fixing the wheels to the axles. Have you considered moulding a stub axle as part of the wheel? RMweb Premium uax6 Posted March 10, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 10, 2018 I agree with Mike, it looks like you have gone for fine flanges, but no coning on the tread. This won't work, triang got away with flat tread by having huge flanges, but you really need to get some coning on them... Andy G
MikeTrice
You are pretty close to being able to do the wheels to fit a Romford axle
sem34090
Thanks for the advice, I'll add the coning soon - can't think how I missed that. The Romford fitting was left out because A.) there may be patent issues and B.) I'm still trying to fathom out how to successfully add a screw thread! MikeTrice
I meant to ignore the axle and use a Romford one. Just modify the wheel to suit. Scalelink and Slaters use a similar system. Edited March 10, 2018 by MikeTrice
RMweb Premium Flying Pig Posted March 10, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 10, 2018 Thanks for the advice, I'll add the coning soon - can't think how I missed that. Apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but I'd suggest you use one of the established model railway wheel profiles as this is more likely to result in wheels that run successfully. For example, the NMRA publishes RP25 online and it includes a very detailed tyre profile that should be possible to implement in your CAD.
sem34090
If I can find the file I will make the changes. Unfortunately that's yet another setback... especially if the file is on the other computer.
Skinnylinny
Thanks for the advice, I'll add the coning soon - can't think how I missed that. The Romford fitting was left out because A.) there may be patent issues and B.) I'm still trying to fathom out how to successfully add a screw thread! No need for a screw thread! If you could make the wheel to fit the Romford axle, the thread is on the axle itself, and the nut - the hole on the wheel centre is just a simple square. RMweb Premium uax6 Posted March 10, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 10, 2018 Is it a simple square, or is it a tapered square to get an interference fit? Andy G
Skinnylinny
I was under the impression it was a simple square - there is a circular nut that fits over the narrowed, threaded section of the axle end. This nut then snugs down to hold the wheel in place. This picture does a far better job of explaining than I ever could with words:
sem34090
It is a simple square I'm afraid. I will adapt the file for the wheels before too long.

Nearholmer
Yes, the apprentice is putting my pace of work to shame too. You’ve got a serious layout-builder in the making there. Edited March 11, 2018 by Nearholmer
RMweb Premium Northroader Posted March 11, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 11, 2018 Was it, what, four weeks ago, you were going “I dunno about this soldering lark”? Now look at the pair of you, very well done! Good luck with the progress of this enterprise.
Hroth
Wish I was so productive! It doesn't help that there are two cakebox challenges, Midsomer Brevis*, the Roundy and The Big Terminus on the go all at the same time.... I really should concentrate on one thing at a time! * Being one aspect of "the universal layout"...

Caley Jim
Wow soldering She is now at your standards James - I see a collaborative project coming on. Good on her and good on you for the encouragement. Agreed. I see an Assistant PW/Electrical Engineer post becoming available on CA, at which point the incumbent Chief Engineer may be required to look to his laurels! RMweb Premium Annie Posted March 12, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 12, 2018 Delightful. These pictures really made me smile this morning. James, your daughter puts me in mind of my own intrepid daughter who at age 30 something is quite fearless about picking up tools and having a go at most things including a year or two ago rebuilding the engine in her car.
