my only complaint is 33008 is the wrong version, I wish it was TOPS only, no headlight, 1960’s logo, HYE... thing with 33008 is theres 33008 different variations of its livery, no two days in service were the same...Its probably the most tweaked livery on a BR loco, Ive counted about 12 variations of Green.

Can ADB or anyone else help out on understanding the livery evolution of 33008?

It seems to have had a blue repaint for Cardiff Canton open day in July 1985, then went green full yellow NO stripe for a while and then a white stripe was added, as per the Heljan model. I remember seeing it, on 19 July 1986, but I'm sure it had white windows over the full yellow end (and body stripe) then? Later pictures show the green reinstated above and around the cab windows from maybe 1987.  It does seem the Heljan livery was maybe pretty short lived, just a few weeks in early summer 1986?

I think the text you quote sums it up very well - it kept changing. Whatever Heljan did, it would be short-lived, and may cover more than one period, being "adjusted" for railtours and open-days. I think the likes of Flickr are your friend here.

Ok thanks - there are a lot of misdated photos on Flickr, including some in green purporting to be from 1985, and others that are several months wrong making it look like there were more changes than there actually were.

I realised I also saw 008 at Cannon Street on 23/08/86 when it definitely had white windows, which I may be confusing with the sighting a month earlier - which as it turns out was before the white windows were applied. Good news.

The livery for the Eastleigh Open Day on 12/10/86 is in the original green small yellow panel style which it seems to have retained until April 1990, then departmental grey.

I can’t put dates to these, but my observations are:

(in no date order)

HYE:

with BR Double Arrows, white stripe, number on body sides

with BR Double Arrows, white stripe, number under cab windows (tops only)
with 1960’s logo white stripe, tops number under cab ends

with 1960’s logo white stripe, tops number under one cab
with 1960’s logo white stripe, tops number one end D6508 the other

with 1960’s logo white stripe Plus yellow Civ Engs stripe markings under 1 cab window, TOPs the other

with BR Double Arrows under one cab, 1960s logo, white stripe, number under 1 cab window (tops only)

FYE (all tops)

Green 1960’s logo, no stripe

Green 1960’s logo, with stripe

Green 1960’s logo, with stripe, white cab surrounds

HYE with headlights

D6508 numbers all 4 cabs

D6508 and 33008 numbers different cabs.

D6508 numbers all 4 cabs, plus 008 on cab front

plus..as a “normal” 33

Green NYE

Green HYE
Blue FYE

Blue Grey roof (as 33025)

Grey

Dutch

even the orange cantrail isn’t consistent, it varied in application...

The white stripe also became cream at one point,  and later still gained an orange outer lining to it too.

I’m sure there’s more I’ve missed.

my favourite is this...

HYE with 1960’s logo white stripe, tops number under one cab, with Civ Eng Stripe on the other cab, but note even on this image, the tops panel is absent under the number and the EH code, at Winchfield 150.

I would add, I haven’t seen any image with a builders plate for this loco, but I’m sure it probably did.

lets hope someday it comes back from its current state...

New arrival

Its fairly hard to model this loco in an Inaccurate way.

She had a full body restoration. Insides still need work I gather.

Gosh the cream stripes have turned plastic yellow....

My Lima model has aged accurately afterall .

I was wondering what had happened to it, didn’t realise it left Cranmore.

Glad to see its on the way back, its at least a decade if not nearly 2 since I saw it.

It sounds like someone with plenty of paint, and time on their hands, was playing with spotters’ minds.

I agree about dates on flickr. All those I linked to I checked there was a least one other photo with similar date in the same livery. Interestingly, I found two photos a few days apart, the first heading to Llandudno, the second at Waterloo, which made me suspicious but both dates seemed to check out.

As before, at age 63, I can't believe that there are still 'rivet counters', from my first Railway Modeller mag at 14, and wondered what a Rivet Counter was.  At normal viewing, yes the main shape of any model needs to be OK, but really, get a life for Christ sake.  All this nit picking over things that can be rectified with a dab of paint.

The Hoddesdon Model Railway Club think I'm nuts keep following my interests on here (Rm Web).  As they put it "There all a bunch of' f******g t*****s'".

Not my words theirs.

Get a life.

by the way they all older than me.

Clipped.

At last 33008 in a livery variant that we all want! No doubt this will sell out in weeks.

It is nice that! Is it going to remain like that when the work on it is finished? Looks the same paintwork as it is in at the moment.

I hope it is not as the photo as preserved, with the non white stripe and cab window surrounds. More likely the long lived last version from 1992 (my pic 07-07-93).

Cheers.

Agreed, be ironic if it does come in off-white as wasn't D6515 supposed to be off-white and came in white!?

There was no such thing as a long lived version.

I’m sure I can even see a man with a paint brush in that picture.

I bet if they stripped all the paint off that they’d find it was in fact a 33/2,

When it comes to 33008 theres very few versions that could be considered inaccurate, just versions its not yet carried...
