Minerva announce Manning Wardle K Class 0-6-0ST

My Manning Wardle turned up in the post today looks great although the smokebox door wheel is missing!

Comparing the model with photos there seems to be a few things that seem different. the wrap over cab seems too narrow and the rear spectacles too close together, I am not sure if there was two widths of cab roof but most photos I have looked at it seems a wider roof was the norm.

The smokebox door seems too flat, I think it was mentioned in previous posts.

Handrails on the tank sides and round the chimney there seems to be two heights the model has them at the higher level.

It seems when brakes were added to all wheels the sandboxes were moved forward to the side of the smokebox.

There seem to be a few different chimneys the model has a narrower one although a slightly fatter one seems more common, Locomotives built by Manning Wardle  by Fred Harman notes that there were a number of chimney changes over the K class build period.

It would be nice it there was an after market add on for the six wheel braked version, and both a more rounded smokebox door and the earlier flush type, plus fatter chimney and a wider etched wrap over cab.

This is not a criticism of the model as I think it looks great, but just a few things that  I noticed that could be upgraded to make it more accurate to cover more members of the class.

I have just finished a customer’s weathering commission for a blue Minerva 0 Gauge Manning Wardle K. The loco crew are ModelU figures painted by Claudia Everett. The works and name plates are Narrow Planet. The tools on the bunker are from the accessory pack included with the loco. This loco is fitted with ZIMO DCC sound using Minerva’s exclusive Paul Chetter sound project; my favourite sound is F15 Cylinder Drain Cocks.

Hi Chris

That looks superb cannot wait to get my hands on one.

Quick question (maybe not the place for this but) have all the pre-ordered DCC sound fitted locos now been dispatched or are you still waiting further deliveries of models and speakers?

Just I have a 'blue' one on order (No.30 I think!) and I've not heard anything yet.

Regards

Dave

Great loco. Any hints on fitting the clack valves? I can see a locating slot but do they need cutting down before fitting? Were they always in the same position as I can't see them clearly in some photos I have.

Many thanks!

Many thanks!

Trimming the fixing tab will ease fitting. The positions on the model are taken from the original Manning Wardle K Class drawing we used, but it is quite plausible that they  might have moved. Consult photos.

Forgive me, for I have been at my Manning Wardle with scalpel, file and glue...

New top hinged smokebox door (still unsure on the location of the toolbox)

And a shortened cab.

I swore I wasn’t going to make any changes to this, being so lovely out of the box. Needless to say I couldn’t resist customising it in the end! Might still change the brake shoes, but will have a think on that over the next few days before I do.

That looks lovely Neil. Mind you're a brave man having the courage to attack such a handsome beast with a knife!

I must say, the livery choices for the MWs are superb, they look wonderful in the lined blue and red in particular.

Nice job on the replacement smokebox door.

At some stage in the future, I intend to replace the brakes on a specimen with more modern apparatus and move the sandboxes and sandpipes. The sandboxes and associated levers can be removed easily by running clean and neat white spirit into the glued joints and allowing the glue to soften for about 40 seconds. Under the sandboxes the sandpipe is held in place by a twist over a raised section on the footplate casting that will need to be cut and filed away.

Have you any thoughts on where to source suitable 'modern' brakes? I also want to replace the brakes with more modern ones and move the sandboxes and sandpipes to the front of my K class.

Stephen

Stephen,

My first stop for more modern brakes will be the Ixion Hudswell Clarke spares box. I'm not sure which of the specialists may have something suitable.

Chris

Can you please share some further details about how this was achieved? I will be doing this exact modification to a K class to represent a pair that were imported to NSW in 1884 and ran on the Camden, Carlingford and Yass lines.

Martin - all I’ve done is to file down the door that is provided (having removed it from the loco first of all). A good large file and some patience are all that’s required. This is done to flatten the door down so that fills the gap in the front of the smokebox. You can then add a replacement door of choice - mine came from a Slaters K class kit which will never get built now but has yielded a lot of useful parts.

Since the above photos, I’ve been even meaner to it, and swapped the chimney...

Also treated to the first coat of green paint!

An alternative to filing off the smokebox door is to run clean, neat white spirit around and into the edges of the door. After 30 ti 40 seconds the glue will soften and the door can be gently levered out with a thin blade. This will leave a circular recess that can filled with a plasticard disc and a little filling around the edge.

Sorry Chris, I should have been clearer - I removed the door first before filling it flat. It probably would have been easier to replace it with a circle of plasticard - something to think about for when I do get round to buying a second one.

Is the smokebox itself a plastic or metal part? The prototype I wish to model has a flat upward-opening door.

The smokebox is plastic as are all of the superstructure parts above the footplate apart from some tiny brass handwheels.

At this rate I’ll be banned from buying products from those nice gentlemen at Minerva...

Just got to sort out the new brake shoes, finish painting the rods red, and sort out some name and worksplates.

Rather pleased with how nicely this has turned out.

Here is my Manning Wardle bringing the General Manager's private saloon into Mynydd Mawr works.  One of, if not THE best running RTR models I have ever purchased. DCC & sound of course. This began life as a black one.

Lovely work and an interesting looking layout as well - is there a thread on the layout itself, please?
