Duddon Bridge - CLOSED

I thought I’d updated this thread since my last visit to Tim’s a couple of weeks ago.

Since our successful Trent Valley Area Group open day, Henmore has gone back into the shed, and Tim and I have started work again on Duddon Bridge in earnest.

The mill race has been extended further up the board, having decided that the mill wheel will be a breast shot one, the channel needed lowering accordingly, so out with the cutter and lo and behold a rather large hole appeared in the board!

We also cut a further hole in the rear of the board as there needed to be a representation of the paper mills outlet channel on the far side:

Its effectively in a culvert under the ‘main line’ and the paper mill sidings.

Some of my wagons got a rare chance to be used at our open day, spending the day trundling up and down Phil’s ‘Black Drake Wharf’ layout:

Rather nice they looked too!

Off to see Tim later today, so no doubt a further update later today/tomorrow.

A very productive day working on Duddon Bridge with @tim@dy

We made a start on painting the underside of the fiddle yard boards, in anticipation of starting to wire the layout.

Having done that, we then turned our attention to finishing laying the bed for the extended mill races. That done, I had the lovely job of sorting out the stone walls for the sides of these. These are cut from Wills 4mm stone sheets, which to us look near enough to Cumbrian/Westmorland stone to be used:

I’ve left Tim with the lovely job of sticking these in place!

While I was sorting the stonework out, Tim was busy with laying the track bed for the mills internal 09 tramway:

This is the starting point (no pun intended - honest!) for the mill tramway - track laying will commence in either direction once the track bed is down.

More progress as and when.

First attempt tonight at hand lettering one of my Furness Railway opens, in this case the 10T high sided open:

There is a distinct lack of FR transfers available to modellers, so I’m having a go using a Posca Paint Pen with an extra fine (0.7mm) nib. It will probably need going over again when it’s dry, and it’s by no means as crisp as a proper transfer. But until they are more readily available, it will have to do :)

Only one photo to show of today’s progress, mainly as I was too busy wielding the soldering iron adding the droppers to the rails in both fiddle yards. Pleased to report no burnt fingers or melted sleepers - yay!

Tim and I then had great fun painting the underside of the five scenic/fiddle yard extension boards, and two out of the three scenic boards. We ran out of room (and paint) before we could tackle the last scenic board.

Not a particularly exciting photo, however it shows the droppers added. Plus the pads cut and glued to the underside of the board to screw the chocolate block connectors too. The board themselves are too thin to screw the connectors directly to, so we’re adding packing pieces cut from thin timber strip.

Stand by for more progress as and when.

A plethora of pre-grouping wagons...

Today has been spent lettering up my Furness Railway stock in readiness for eventual use on Duddon Bridge (and Elsbridge too in later time periods). All lettering done by hand using a Posca paint pen and nerves of steel!

Rather pleased with bow how they look, I must get on and paint the meat van so that I can letter that one next.

Front right is the start of the latest scratchbuild to join the fleet, a Maryport & Carlisle 10T low sided open, just for a bit of variety.

Forgot to update this the other day - the Maryport & Carlisle Railway open is making fairly rapid progress:

Just the extended end stanchions to go then I can sort out buffers etc. and a coat of paint.

Neil,

You've made excellent use of those Peco setrack points and they look so effective. I've learned a lot and I think I will use them on my little project as a result of how good they look on DB.

Really enjoying following your thread.

Cheers,

David

Broughton & Dunnerdale Light Railway A1X ‘Robin’ has recently been through the paintshop at Ulpha. Mr Ulthwaite had a nice new tin of apple green paint that he quite fancied trying out, and as ‘Robin’ was looking a little bit scruffy round the edges, it was decided that she would be the candidate:

She’s just waiting for a new set of safety valves and a vacuum ejector pipe before she can re-enter service.

Lining as per ‘Brendam’ over on my Elsbridge (Wharf) thread, carried out using Posca paint pens.

A new locomotive has arrived at Duddon Bridge, courtesy of those nice gentleman at the Minerva locomotive works...

Isn't she a beauty! She almost makes a Terrier look bigger than it actually is...

More progress on Duddon Bridge round at Tim’s today.

Tim’s had the very good idea of providing a couple of extra storage sidings in the fiddle yards, radiating out off the turntables, so the first task today was to get the track laid on the first of these, and then add the dropper wires:

A7DC4B79-5F90-4F58-B3E9-49994D342297.jpeg.7a7a5bff37fdfa189e0eac1b77b965e5.jpeg

Long enough to hopefully hold the largest loco on the layout (Jinty), or a couple of wagons if needs be.

We then turned our attention to adding the checkrails to the papermill siding, this had the added complication that we’d only decided to have inset track after we’d laid the Peco! Lots of faffing with packing pieces ensued, so that we could add PCB sleepers in to solder the check rails to. Always better with hindsight!

Looking from the back of the layout - the newly checkrailed paper mill siding in the foreground. Couldn’t resist taking along my A1X and MW K class locos for a pose on the layout! Though not sure how the K class is going to get anywhere as there’s a rather large hole where the tramway bridge was...!

The O9 internal tramway for the mill will run alongside the standard gauge trackwork here (nearest me), as both will pass under the main building of the mill to reach the rest of the complex.

Since my last visit Tim has started to add the stone walling to the inside of the mill race. Looks good so far, just need to buy a few more packets now to finish it all off, build a central pier for the bridge etc.

We’ve also added all the dropper wires to the standard gauge track now on this board. Only another two scenic boards to go (both fiddle yards are already done thankfully). We also then need to sort out the O9 trackwork, and my homework is to gap a large quantity of PCB sleepers for this...oh what fun! :D

More progress as and when.

Spent last Saturday at Tim’s working on the mock-up buildings for the mill buildings on the third scenic board.

Looking from the rear of the layout, on the left is the mill which predates the railway. Then in the background are the two paper mill buildings that will stand at that end of the layout. As you can see, the right hand line (paper mill internal) will go under the bottom of the main paper mill building, with the NG internal tramway running close alongside it.

Between the two papermill buildings will be the ‘main line’ running down the road and into the fiddle yard.

Where the block of wood is on the right hand side of the board will be the boiler house for the papermill, with a section of NG internal tramway entering this to deliver coal and remove ash etc.

The view that the public will see, the mill leat side of the older mill, complete with water wheel and sluice gates etc. once installed.

This is already turning out to be my favourite spot on the layout - looking over the lightweight tramway, over where a farm land will cross this and then the mill race, between the paper mill and mill buildings.

At the front left will be a half relief cottage ala Bodmin & Wadebridge hiding the exit of the lightweight tramway into the fiddle yard - it will be tight squeeze down this line with the buildings so close together.

This has been a very difficult message to write.

Yesterday morning my very good friend, and joint builder/owner/operator of the layout, Tim Allsopp (tim@dy on here) sadly lost his battle with cancer.

Sadly, my update above on the 31st May was to be the last time that we managed to do any work on the layout together, as his health took a turn for the worse not long after.

I managed to get over to see him last Thursday, on the day that he moved into the hospice for respite care, and we had a good chat about all and sundry. He was still in good spirits, with his sense of humour still firmly in place. I've promised him that I'll carry on with Duddon Bridge and finish it off. We had been aiming to have it ready for our open day next January, even it was only 'digitally' powered.

I shall miss our chats where we put the world to rights, and discussed all sorts of silly ideas over many cups of tea at his house, and many pints of Landlord in the Brunswick. Without Tim's advice and guidance, I doubt that half of my projects would have got going, and I shall really miss that he was always there, ready to help.

So long my friend, I shall be raising a glass of Landlord in your memory tonight.
