Balkan O gauge (Croatia and Serbia)

Chris excuse delay in responding - I have 3 o gauge layouts, all modern image and  all o gauge.

Nouvion my French layout which has done about a dozen show's since 2013.

Britvik the Norwegian layout which has done 4 or 5 shows and then the project on this thread, Croatian o gauge - where the standard I am seeking will usurp Britvik and Nouvion in build quality and detail.

I've been beetling away on the scratch built HZ 2044 diesel. Photos to appear soon.

Best wishes Paul aka Devonbelle

I’ve attached a photo of the HZ 2044 I’m scratch building.

Starting now to fit the grills and body side doors. That said I diverted the last few days, to do the buffer and associated beams. Picture shows one end as I was starting to brush on some grey primer - always helpful to pop some primer on to show blemishes that need filling. I’ll spray paint the loco once all body work is complete in the attractive HZ blue.

I’ll post some more progress later in the week.

I’ll be interested to see how this shapes, it looks quite promising. I’ve got a diesel shunter with a high hood I be been dithering over in plastikard for some time. It will be nice to see how you tackle the body detail.

Buffers and their beams attached. Some smoothing off to happen. Back to doing grills now. Then the (many) bodyside doors for access the engine under the long hood.

Clearly once loco finished; some Lima UIC coaches will get the treatment with a respray into HZ pass train colours. Pictures of progressed attached - I think the model is starting to capture the bulk of HZ 2044 class locos. Paul

I’ve pressed on with doing the bodyside inspection doors. Few photos of the work the last few evenings. I have to say it’s therapeutic cutting bodyside doors out! Now, looking forward to fitting over 50 bodyside door hinges.

Update - all the vertical body side doors have been applied; on both sides of the loco hood. Then hinges next - all 72 of them; followed by a small number of horizontal inspection panel doors. Progress photo attached with a patriotic background!

Back on with the loco; got some primer on tonight to see what areas need filling. Majority of doors on now; and hinges attached. Next some horizontal bodyside doors to do. Will tackle in coming days. The buffer beams (both ends, need squaring). Paul

Pressing on with work on the 2044. The spray painting helped, allowing tonhihjlihjt areas that need more work.

I have reset the front buffer beam and then worked on the area ahead of the cab - one side only - where I think the batteries are for the starter and what looks like an outlet for the locos turbo charger.

I’ve cracked in and now built up a part of the hood top and fitted further bodyside panels. Hinges for the newest panels and hand grabs/hand rails will go in this week.

After fitments this week another thin coat of primer has gone on; that’s also helping me to highlight where further light sanding will be required.

Clearly scope for a lot more modelling this year.

Busy April at work - so no work until tonight on the HZ 2044.

Tonight managed to fit cab steps and steps at nose end and the defector plates/snow ploughs on each end. The photo is deceptive the steps are mounted equal distant.

Pressing on today - happily; with a good grilling! Without rushing and spoiling the build I’m seeing how much I can archive by Bank Holiday next Friday. Just working on top of distinctive nose end. Stay safe. Paul

Really into the last stages of the loco build now. Front end fan grills finished and top light cluster with rain guard on the front end.

Cab interior to build and cab roof. And then finally handrails.

Had a good hour or so on the 2044 the last few days. Picture showing the upper cab end lighting area - my loco will be 2044-030 which doesn’t presently carry illuminated numerals on the cab end. Some prototypes do (I suspect all did when built in the 1970s).

Getting close now to final coat of primer and first coat of blue paint - but I keep spotting small details I want to replicate on the model!

Looking good :-)

They did all have illuminated number panels but this was the old JZ number which wasn’t the same number as the Croatian Railways HZ 2044 number, so the panels were blacked out see picture below.

HZ 2044007 Zagreb Gl kol 15,8,03

In the early days of Croatian Railways there was quite a game working out the former identities of locomotives.

Stay safe,

Thanks Neil and much appreciated for the excellent insight and fascinating pictures - works plate with Jugoslavia crudely ground off.

This week I’m trying to get all plastic work complete; ready to receive blue paint. Then I’ll fit the handrails; with holes drilled this week. Stay well one and all. Paul

Really looking forward to the finished 2044 !! It might even persuade me to actually make a HO scale one using a Fratschi chassis I have as a base for maybe a "Shapeways" body shell.

My plans are to model the one in the picture above, 007 in Green.

All depends really on how much time I have between my various modelling projects !!!

Stay Safe,

Neil

A lull of a good few weeks; I needed a break and I’ve come back to the 2044 loco project refreshed and it’s had final coats of primer now that all plastic work on the body is complete.
Tomorrow will see first coat of spray blue.

The body top area in front of the cab is a thin metal sheet that it’s possible to see under - which the second picture down depicts.

Ive purchased Fox transfers for numbering the loco and from David Parkins some lovely brass cast horns. The cab is not affixed as it will be lift off until I’ve finished the can detailing.

Up at 0630 this morning meant first coat of spray blue was applied. It took well and is a Humbrol acrylic spray paint. Taking well to a well known car superstore spray primer. I am very please with finish but decided a little light sanding needed on a few imperfections. A second tomorrow. Then will start on handrail fitment is 2nd coat sufficient. Paul

Subsequent coat of blue on the loco and a 3rd thin one to come. Just sorting my wheel sets. I’m going with Lima power bogies. Wheelbase long than the prototype- but I will build correct patten bogie side frames - so a test run coming soon. Behind the loco is the other set of donor bogies - as a 2044 class is 6 axled machine

Lima power bogie fits beautifully. Test run this week; as a Bo-Bo, then I’ll add extra wheel set to each bogie to make a. Co-Co. Rather than keeping and adapting the Lima bogie sideframes Im going to scratch build proper GM bogie side frames.

The picture Shows the power bogie fit and the fact I’ve removed the steps and corner plate - they weren’t good enough so will do some rework. I have to admit I’m very pleased how the loco sits on the power bogie.

I’ve got a tentative booking for the layout in a years time so once loco finished I’ll get back into the layout. All track work and points are wired and tested. Stay well. Paul

Well - the excellent summer (from a weather perspective) and lockdown meant lots of working from home; cycling and country walks. Modelling took a hit.

Back now and this afternoon 2044 has had a run. The attached picture (on Lapford Gate my North Devon micro layout)  shows the bulk of the loco. I am just on with scratch building the bogie side frames. Pictures to come in next day of so. Watch this space! Paul
