Dave,

I'm not trying to hi-jack your thread, but you might like these pictures. Two of them are of the very last survivor in service - 62822. The other two were taken in LNER days, during the 1930's; the first at Doncaster Works and the second at Newcastle, with a C1 piloting an A4?

All of these photos are courtesy of Mick Nicholson, whose photo collection is fast becoming legendary.

My but these locos were lovely things!!

Cheers

Mike

Dave,

[nice phots omitted]

I had a look yesterday at Yeadon for any indications about the smokebox door stop -- as the GA has the right hand side of the front aspect half-sectioned.

I could be wrong, but from photos it looks more like a small "ball-like" knob screwed in from behind. Imagine a miniature handrail knob without the hole.

Thanks for looking Dave it isn't clear below are a couple of enlarged crops from photos.

Difficult to assess what it is, you can see the 2 bolts one either side, whether they were to bolt the stop on or not is a different matter, i'll make a piece as you say like a blind handrail knob shaped at the top and attached to a small strip which i can add 2 bolt heads. I have to make up a new hinge for the smokebox door anyway as the casting for that and the chimney were not great.

It's the doorstop, isn't it? Found on many GN doors. Maybe try other Yeadons for a better view? - K2s, N2s, etc.

EDIT: here are some K2s from Locos Illustrated:

I've just looked at the V-2 GA from 1936, and there's no door-stop. Could it be that this is a post-war, or BR addition?

If so -- as I model the pre-war LNER -- this probably explains why I've not previously noticed them.

For the V2s the door stop was built in to the door hinges.

Neither Locos Illustrated nor Yeadon show the stop on K2s in GN days - but I have no books containing pictures of GN Atlantics. One photo of a K2  with the stop in LI is dated 1934, and they appear more and more in the 1930s shots. However, given that some West Highland K2s arrived with the stop already fitted, that would suggest it started to be fitted before their 1933-4 move to Scotland (I can't see Cowlairs making the same stop as whichever shed maintained them in the south). Some K2s also had the stop incorporated as an extension to the hinge straps as on the V2 above.

The same appears to be true of the J6's: no GN period modifications, but an increasing number starting from about the late 1920s.

By the way, there is an excellent photo on alamy.com (image id PAPE4C) of the preserved N2 1744, showing this stop in significant detail. I'm unsure about the propriety of linking to commercial images, so you'll need to go to the site and enter the details I've given into a search.

That's the best photo i've seen, it certainly shows far more detail than the pixelated ones i have previously garnered. Thanks for all the info everyone is contributing, there is something aesthetically pleasing about the V2 stop. Simple but effective.

Not had chance to get anything done over the last few days, preparation for replacing a 30m fence with a mixed species hedge is taking up most of my time (until my back creaks and groans too much).

Rain stopped play, well digging the trench so some time was spent in the shed.

Pretty much everything has been added now apart from handrails which will be fitted after painting. The castings for the chimney and smokebox door weren't great but i'll add a touch of filler once it's primed to tidy things up. The back head was a trial for my eyes but it looks something like, not perfect by any means, so i'll try to improve on that next time. All runs nice and smoothly with pick ups for the moment on the 2 pairs of drivers. I'll add pick ups to the tender wheels.

Very nice but you've lost it on the face slightly - the door is not right, and that's where all the character comes from. Could you use a scrap N2 or A3 body? I'm not sure what size all of those boilers are.

And the s.box door handles are b. awful! Easy to make your own, which are much finer:

The A3 boiler is quite a bit bigger but i may have an N2 somewhere that may be a possibility, Yeah your spot on with the door handle it's a monster. I'll rework that front end.

What about a J6 (if there's such a thing) or K2 from LRM? They certainly sell castings for the NER stuff, so may do for GN too.

I've replaced the door handles on the smoke box door and in my eyes it's looking better, i'll take photos another time. In the meantime i've been cutting out the tender parts and getting those ready for assembly.

IMAG5833.jpg.4c56b8447c40d5ac44bd9973429427dd.jpg

The outer frames cut out and drilled as a pair, the slots in the tender base have been modified too to make it easier to solder the tender top, and coal chute from the underside.

IMAG5834.jpg.333e14852cf869a82ad3c77cc1bef421.jpg

I scored the tender sides under the flare with an Olfa cutter as i prefer to form the flares from the same piece rather than try to form some very narrow pieces of brass.

The fingers have been soldered.

IMAG5838.jpg.f8d2e3c0088d53b5529baa1681f94f95.jpg

Some internal stiffeners added to help keep the shape . I've also added some strips on the inside of the sides so that the top and coal chute assembly will sit on these once completed.

IMAG5837.jpg.a836d9d13d242a89962bee1175c2c5cd.jpg

I have also made a start on the front bulkhead with the lockers, and coal guard, apologies for the poor picture it's been rather dark in Scotland all day but i'll take some better ones on a better day. Many thanks to Rob Pulham's 7MM J6 topic, he has been also making a self trimming Ivatt tender so that has been a big help.

IMAG5839.jpg.fb3a4fe0e0ab3401e80e0b58e3ce41c1.jpg

Coal chute, tender top, rear bulkhead, dome and filler next, then coal rails and all the beading at the tender front.

The coal chute sides, bottom were assembled to the front bulkhead

I made up the dome from a strip of flat rolled around an exacto knife and the filler was from a piece of brass tube. The mushroom vents were a bit of a fiddle made up again from 2mm dia tube, for the tops i cut out a small circle of very thin brass sheet made a cut to the centre of the circle and wrapped it around forming the cone. I tried several times as it was very tricky getting the cone fairly equal on all sides.

IMAG5842.jpg.6a8dea28eadde9d57f0ec3d67fdd8fd8.jpg

Some lead weight was added to the tank base on the inside before soldering everything together. Blanking plates to the coal rails were added and the rails themselves are from 1mm half round rod.  Beading added also to the front of the side sheets along with 4 lifting eyes from small cotter pins.

IMAG5847.jpg.c39c943e270715d54e604819c342e8f7.jpg

I've used a Comet inner chassis for a Fowler tender which is 6'-6 x 6'-6 so the centre axle etch was cut off and moved along 2mm to make it 6'-0 x 7'-0. Axle boxes still to add along with a brake standard, buffers and lamp irons to the rear and it's just about there.

Added the tender axle boxes and brake gear, Cut some rod for the misc handrails and assembled it all together.

IMAG5858.jpg.9f7591baf47576d3b6a0746e27b1e752.jpg

Pickups to add to the tender once the chassis is painted but otherwise it's just about there i think. Plenty that could be improved on but i'm happy that my first scratch build has gone ok.

It's pretty cool here 6 degree highs during the day at the moment so painting will have to wait a while.

Cheers for all the info and assistance it's much appreciated.
