Erith Model Railway Society

At the Erith Model Railway Society’s AGM on Wednesday 4th April, the members of the club who were present have elected Iain Nunn as Chairman, succeeding John Muskett who passed away at the end of November 2017. Iain was elected to the Committee in 2015 and is one of the team behind our new flagship layout Fleet Lane (see photos). In honour of John Muskett, the Committee has decided to introduce a trophy for the January show for the best layout as voted for by the public. The John Heath Cup for Best Scenic Details will be discontinued.

Paul Plummer, Clive Simpson and Stan Monger-Godfrey are still Exhibition Manager, Secretary and Treasurer respectively. The other ‘ordinary’ Committee Members, David Bone, Janet Jackson and Peter Wells, have been joined by Michael Chipperfield who has been the club’s Webmaster and producer of the club’s fanzine, The Invicta Informant, since 2013.

The club was founded in 1962 and meets every Wednesday evening from 6:30pm up to 9:30pm at our clubrooms in Belvedere Working Men’s Club where we have been based since 2013. We are in the enviable position of not having to share our facilities with anybody else, so the rooms are potentially available every day of the week.

New members are always more than welcome. Before taking the plunge and signing-up, we suggest that anybody interested in joining the club visits the clubrooms on a couple of Wednesdays just to get to know the members and get a feel of the place.

More details about the club, its layouts and its exhibitions can be found be found on our website:

If you are interested in joining a friendly, active and local society please contact the club via the ‘Contact Us’ page on our website:

Any further news about the club will be posted on this thread.

The club's flagship layout Fleet Lane was invited to the West Sussex N Gauge Model Railway Club's show at Angmering on the 3rd & 4th November where the team who built and operates the layout were very pleased to have been awarded 'Best in Show'.

Thank you to those who attended the exhibition and to the West Sussex N Gauge MRC's for the invite and their hospitality.

The Erith Model Railway Society has taken the decision to cease organising our September exhibition (currently located at the Leigh Academy in Dartford).

Quite simply the number of visitors attending the show has fallen to such a level as it is no longer financially viable to continue.

Visitor numbers this year were down by over 30% and this coupled with increased costs in delivering the show have forced the club's committee into taking this difficult decision.

The January exhibition remains unaffected and I will start a thread for that next month.

The club's flagship layout Fleet Lane has received the physical 'Best in Show' Shield that it won at the West Sussex N Gauge MRC's exhibition back in early November 2018 (see image).

Hopefully it will be the first of many such accolades.

With immediate effect the club rooms will be closed with club nights cancelled for the foreseeable future.

The situation will be reviewed at the end of April and an update will be provided.

The Erith Model Railway Society held its AGM on Thursday 17th March. This was the club's first AGM since 2019 as Covid had forced cancellation for those scheduled for 2020 and 2021.

The club's Committee remains unchanged and consists of:

Alan Bone - Chairman.

Paul Plummer - Exhibition Manager.

Clive Simpson - Secretary.

Stan Monger-Godfrey - Treasurer.

David Bone - Committee Member.

Michael Chipperfield - Committee Member.

Janet Jackson - Committee Member.

Ever since the clubrooms have reopened at the end of July 2021, attendance on club nights has gradually increased over the weeks. Presently between 20 something and 30 something members attend club nights every Wednesday evening. New members are always welcome. We suggest that anybody interested in joining the club visits our clubrooms in Belvedere on a couple of Wednesdays (between 6:30pm and 9:00pm) just to get to know the members and the feel of the place before taking the plunge and signing-up.

So any railway modellers, railway enthusiasts or modellers in general, regardless of skill, in South East London and North West Kent who are interested to joining a friendly and active club (which is turning 60 in 2022), please do not hesitate to get in contact with us.

Just want to mention quickly that the club's Exhibition Manager Paul Plummer has participated in the London Marathon, raising money for the British Heart Foundation in memory of his father-in-law and dearly missed Erith MRS member John G Jones MBE who passed away in 2021.

Paul's time was 4 hours, 39 minutes and 35 seconds. Congratulations!

There is still time to donate (if you want to) by following the link here:
