Our next model, the highly exclusive CIÉ/Irish Rail 24850-24854 series ballast plough van, is now available to pre-order ahead of delivery in August 2018!

Five of the CIÉ/Irish Rail 24850-24854 series vans were introduced in 1978 to supersede elderly pre-grouping vans for the Civil Engineering Department. They usually ran in pairs, top-and-tailing ballast hopper trains across the Irish railway network until their withdrawal in 2013.

Following the success of our first model, the CIÉ/Irish Rail Ballast Hopper wagons, it seemed fitting to add the Ballast Plough to our range to complete a typical Irish ballast train. The model will utilise the same chassis as the ballast hopper and cement bubbles as per prototype, and will include features such as fully detailed interior, wire mesh on the windows (where appropriate) and full DCC control of interior and tail lights via a two function 8 pin decoder (not supplied). The vans will also feature switches to operate these features on analogue systems.

The Plough Vans will be made in a strictly limited production run. Four of the five vans will be represented in this batch of releases, with the vans coming in two packs of two for a sale price of €119.95. This price reflects the very small production volume and complexity of the model.

There will be an IR and IE pack, both carrying CIÉ/Irish Rail ‘Machinery Yellow’ as per prototype. The IR pack will feature two vans with the IR ‘points’ logo, gained in the late 1980’s and observed on some plough vans as late as 2006. The second will be in IE livery, which represents the final years of these unique vans.

These vans will nicely finish off rakes of IRM ballast wagons and help complete an authentic Irish ballast train. Orders are now being taken via the IRM website: www.irishrailwaymodels.com/product-category/freight-stock/ballast-plough/

One of the two items shown publicly this evening at the SDMRC was a 3D print of the plough van. We're delighted how this has turned out and tooling continues with production slated for after the Tara. There are a good few detail parts missing, such as brake gubbins, glazing and grills but it does how off the finesse and fine detailing of the model.

Irish Railway Models to Release Ballast Plough in Original CIE Condition as Bonus 2018 Range Surprise

We are delighted to announce that our forthcoming highly exclusive CIÉ/Irish Rail 24850-24854 series ballast plough van, is now available to pre-order in original CIE condition as an additional bonus model in the 2018 IRM range.

Five of the CIÉ/Irish Rail 24850-24854 series vans were introduced in 1978 to supersede elderly pre-grouping vans for the Civil Engineering Department. They usually ran in pairs, top and tailing ballast hopper trains with the plough/veranda facing inward across the Irish railway network until their withdrawal in 2013.

We had previously announced the vans in later IR and IE condition, but after calls from modellers an additional pack in original CIE condition has now been added to the production run, strictly limited to 250 packs.

The CIE plough vans will be faithful to the prototypes, lacking the later applied mesh screening over all the windows and it will also feature the half-sized doors on the veranda of each van. The vans will come finished in yellow with CIE roundels as per the real thing.

The model will utilise the same chassis as the ballast hopper and cement bubbles as per prototype, and will include features such as fully detailed interior, including bunks and heaters for the crew, as well as full DCC control of interior and tail lights via a two function 6 pin decoder. (sold separately) The vans will also feature a switch for these features for analogue control users.

The Plough Vans will be made in a strictly limited production run with the vans coming in a pack of two for a sale price of €119.95. They will make a perfect companion for a new run of IRM Ballast hoppers with CIE roundel livery which we plan to release in 2019.

Discount bundles will also be offered for those buying all three packs of plough vans, with a special price of €340 for all three sets, meaning the CIE set will cost just €100, a saving of €19.95! This will be open to those who have previously ordered both IR and IE packs who wish to add the CIE pack to their order, with an email being sent to customers with a personal discount code enclosed later today. If you have already bought one pack, and wish to add the other two and receive the special offer, email us with your order number and we will process it for you.

This price reflects the very small production volume and complexity of the model. The adapting of the moulds to account for the tooling changes required to offer the plough van means that delivery of all the plough van models including IR and IE livery will now be pushed back to October 2018.

Orders are now being taken here.

Well Fran that looks like a 89 photo, them lamps did not last long.

The pic is dated early 80s, but of course it might be wrong.

At the end of the day it would cost too much to retool the whole body for a single oil lamp and it would render the whole project unviable. If modellers would rather go for a single lamp arrangement that was used in the earlier years the can either buy this van and modify it with some Modelling, or pick up the SSM kit and modify that too. We do believe that the van did have twin lamps during the CIE era too however, and are producing this livery based on our customer feedback. The great thing is now Irish modellers have a choice. We do work closely with many experts in prototype operations like the IRRS and others who have been a great help.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Fran

Lovely model. Am I alone in wondering why five prototypes were made when they usually ran in pairs?

Hi locoholic,

Many thanks for that. Correct, they mostly ran in pairs, especially in latter years as they bookended a ballast hopper rake, but there are instances of them running solo on occasion too.

Cheers!

Fran

Hi everyone,

Here's the first engineering sample of the ploughs from the factory in China. Overall there is a lot to like but some changes required too. These will be conveyed back to China and changed before we received decorated samples.

Please note that fit and finish isn't up to the usual standards of a fully factory finished model, that finesse comes later!

Our factory has painted it a nice shade of blue too. We don't think it's a close match for BR blue, but we need to be learning more about that shade soon I'm sure...

Cheers!

Lovely model. Just a constructive suggestion. If possible on the final production model, it would be nice if the actual plough itself was a little ‘finer’ (ie thinner). Appreciate tolerances with plastic and moulding but even if edges were a little sharper it would give the impression of being thin like the prototype. In fairness it’s difficult to see with the dark blue sample, but on the previous white sample the actual plough itself seemed quite substantial in terms of its thickness.

Hi Fran.

Thanks for reply, that's great.  I forgot to also request if possible 'warm white' (yellow tint) for the internal LED light rather than 'cool white' (blue tint).

Hi Noel,

The LEDs are prototypically matched to the colour lights of the real thing, and with our recommended ESU DCC chip, you can even set the exact lighting level you prefer.

It will be warm white LED for interior lighting Noel, rest assured. As Stephen says there will be settings to adjust the brightness of both tail and interior light with the DCC chip installed.

Cheers,

Fran

Hi everyone,

We have just received some decorated factory samples of the plough vans and here are some pics for you to enjoy. Yes, there should be no doors on the IE variant, that's just for us to assess them for the CIE one!

Cheers,

Fran
