150th Anniversary of Lairg Station

Lairg Local History Society is commemorating the 150th Anniversary of Lairg Station with an exhibition of old photographs, documents and memorabilia. Images and documents have been very kindly donated to the exhibition by local people, the Highland Railway Society and Robert Dey from the Dougie Kirk Collection.

 

'The station was opened on 13 April 1868 by the Sutherland Railway. The Sutherland Railway was authorised on 29 June 1865 to link Bonar Bridge with Brora, a distance of 32.5 miles. Its construction was heavy and expensive, involving the crossing of the Kyle of Sutherland by a viaduct of five arches supporting a girder bridge. A steady climb towards Lairg required the creation of rock cuttings near Lairg, and sadly two young men died during the blasting of a rock cutting above the Shin.'

 

In addition two layouts are still under construction with a micro-model of Invershin Station (which shares the same anniversary), being installed in May, and a larger layout of Lairg Station, to be installed in June.
