LBSCR Inspection Car

Recommended Posts

Hello!

Yesterday, I purchased a copy of K. Marx's The Communist Manifesto London Brighton & South Coast Railway Album and happened to spot on one of the pages an LBSCR Inspection car (Automobile if you live on the wrong side of the Atlantic!) complete with headcode disks.

I had never previously come across this vehicle, but according to the caption there were a few of them.

Would anyone be able to shed more light on this? I'm used to seeing such contraptions on narrow gauge (they appeal to my NG side!) but the thought of an LBSCR one is too tempting to resist!

I would imagine that they would have been in a plain livery, but I.E.G. is tempting... or even goods green.

If so the livery looks very plain to me, with just what looks like "LB&SCR Engineers" on the side. The picture is dated 1906 and the colour looks very dark.

That particular inspection car was built by Alldays and Onions, an early British car manufacturer. The LBSCR had at least two others based on other car designs, as well as one or two more primitive motorised vehicles probably for the permanent way gangs. They also has a tiny enclosed Drewry railcar, with banks of seats, in addition to the internal combustion maintenance vehicles for the Electrical Department

Hello. I found your forum whilst looking for Alldays inspection cars. My grandfather was James Drewry and he designed and built the Drewry railcars mentioned above. (Drewry Car Co).

I appreciate your group are really into models but thought a member may be interested in the attached photo I found in my grandfathers files.  It was taken during the building of the Cape/Cairo railway in Bulawayo area in about 1906/8. Does anyone know if there is an record of the Alldays being in SA? Or does anyone know an email address of someone who could help me. Are there  any rail models of inspection cars?

The wording on the back of the photo, in my grandfathers writing, is :

“ From left to right

                Buchan’s Allday’s, “little Drewry” reconstructed

Alldays on “Drewry” Plans (?), Buchans new Drewry

                B. R. new “Drewry”

                Foreground

                Me and re-built “Drewry”
