Seems Hattons missed on trick with the 66 - smoke!!

This is an ESU HO 66, personally it looks plain wrong as modern diesels don't emit smoke like a steam engine.  It also seems to glow around the wheels when it brakes - do the real ones do that?

Like you I don’t like the unrealistic smoke, does show though why unboxing videos can be  useful.

Wonder what the Dapol 59 will be like?

It should smoke when performing a cold start then 'clean out', perhaps smoking again at full throttle momentarily ... but despite the novelty, not that realistic.

The 'flashing' around the bogies is said to be 'wheel sparking' ... a feature too far?

It was like watching a German porn video...disrobed, oiled up and then having a cigarette after some action :jester:

The German model 66 is awful compared to the Hattons version,i know which one i would have and i will not be buying the smoke 59 when Dapol get there act together.

Heljan’s HO 66 isnt too bad, it doesnt smoke thankfully.

That ESU smokes like the onions in a Teppenyaki grill.

I've seen the ESU one in EWS colours at our club - it didn't have 'smoke' but it did have the awful 'sparky' brakes effect - that didn't seem to tie in too well with the brake screech. The moulding body-wise isn't the same as the Bachy one due to it being a metal die-casting. As an aside, having been used to all my 00 kit, the H0 version looked just a shade under-nourished ;).

Cheers,

Philip

The HO 66 looks ok, but to see how good it really is it would have to be compared alongside all the other offerings. The smoke unit is woeful.

Smoke in OO...

I have seen it done on a OO steam layout recently where the smoke was actually puffing out & it looked quite good. It was apparently done with vaping products so the smoke was dry.

It seems to have moved forward since the earlier examples of a static heater burning oil which dribbled out, giving the boiler a rather un-prototypical gloss.

Sound has moved on a lot over the past few years. Maybe smoke will make similar progress?

It is another catch 22 though. It won't be properly developed unless people take an interest...but not many people will buy it until it works a little better.

I believe this may develop through lager scales where there is more space to add a 'puffer' fan.

I once saw video of a German O gauge layout with smoke fitted steam loco's. It was the most realistic I've seen, seem to remember it was synced with the sound, and the safety valves and cylinder cocks worked which must take some skill to pipe up inside. Sadly I can't find it now.

Hello all,

I have often thought vaping technology would create a far more effective impression of steam, but I Imagine any locos so equipped would need it to be switched off for indoor public shows to comply with smoking/vaping legislation.

cheers

It does open up the idea of having you loco smell like strawberry cheese cake flavour !!

There is a layout on the circuit that has steam locos (mainly BR/GWR) which has superb smoke/ steam effects developed by one of the guys who helps run it. It is certainly the most realistic I have ever seen. I believe he wants to develop it commercially but is having patent problems (I may be wrong), it can be done but needs people to develop a realistic system that people will buy into.

If the vapers could be persuaded to vape "steam coal and oil" flavour, or "diesel clagg" flavour then there is a potential there for railway modellers to modify the vapes for their locomotives. ;)

If it can be done for flavours like strawberry cheesecake, then why not for steam coal/oil or diesel?

I hope not, the idea of walking into a show hall and being assaulted with clammy man mixed with diesel and steam is horrendous. The mix of smells would be bizarre, oh add horse crap for the shunting yard too!

It’d be an assault on the senses worse than walking into a Lush store ;)  There’s bound to be the smell equivalent of the max sound volume lot who turn it to max to show off how smelly they are.

Thankfully I suspect the vaping restrictions and effects on asthmatics protect those of us who enjoy a sense of smell :D

I had to get a light source into position so I could get close up to the bogie side and the chassis above. The part in question is mid photo on the chassis, is lower than the rest of the chassis plate and appears to have a chain link moulded above its lowest point. The bogies sit against these lugs. Hope this helps.

here is the ‘lug’ on a real class 66 bogie 13682A68-11F8-4956-8B9F-20BBF602E239.jpeg.5f1cf11c9012c128d9897d66c3399450.jpeg

it basically stops the bogies falling off should a giant try and pick up the loco
