The owner of a certain modelling emporium in the capital of the Principality delivered 9479 this afternoon and the loco was quickly out into service. So here it is arriving

I have a couple of small problems needing my attention

  • These are the first two locos I have bought with sound fitted, all the others have SWD chips fitted. So the function buttons are different on these two and are even different from each other! 9479 has a whisle on F4 & F8 but does not respond to the horn button on the Powercab. So I will need to find the Powercab manual and study it
  • Halfway through the point motor of the bay to short siding failed. Oh dear!

The Johnster will cope.  And he'll post a similar batch of photos in a week or so from the mountain fastnesses of Cwmdimbath.  I have a similar pair of Hornby non-gangwayed Colletts and am looking forward to recreating this train; Tondu used it's 94xx allocation for passenger work more or less exclusively according to the Hodge/Davies books, though mine will no doubt appear on coal trains and pickups occasionally.

Seems to run smoothly even over my track which is shall we say rough indifferent in a couple of places. The Bachmann decoder includes a setting I haven't seen before - F 20 turn inertia off or on (latching setting).

I will try and make a short video next week.

Danemouth has acquired additional motive power, a 121 Bubblecar and a 117 DMU, both green with speed whiskers and Bachmann fitted sound. The 117 will run as a two car unit as there isn't a long enough road in the fiddleyard for a 3 car unit.

So here we see both unit

The modelling tokens have taken a hammering this year with this purchase and the Bachmann 94xx and Mogul. Still to come over the next 12 months are the Manor, 15xx and 16xx. Peter at L & B has the 16xx or order so it won't be too long hopefully

The purchase of these units highlights a problem with sound fitted motive power- I have 13. The steam locos with the exception of the Mogul had SWD chips fitted after purchase, as were a couple of the diesels, However functions work differently in several locos. My way around this was to compile a loco roster printed on A3+ card and displayed in the fiddleyard. The back has the operational diagram on it - I rarely use that as by now  I know the macro by heart.

Danemouth Loco Roster.pdf

Not all the settings are shown, just the ones I tend to use.

Danemouth still gets a run from time to time and every now and again I think of rebuilding it - I can lengthen it by about 12 iches and would like aan additional siding in the goods yard.

I doubt I will exhibit it again - my back would be less than happy with lifting it and standing around for much of the day.

I am still really pleased with what I have given that I am not the best of modellers

Cheers,

Well my mojo has been in hibernation for many months but woke up a few weeks back resulting in me  giving the layout a thorough clean and minor alterations to the station platform  - originally it had more people which was annoying me.

I purchased an Accurascale Siphon and to round things off a new loco just outshopped from Swindon appeared at Danemouth hauling a Siphon and carriage detached from an express at "The Junction".

Oh look it's 7812 Earlstoke Manor 😁

Danemouth has another new loco a Rapido 15xx - the black late crest sound version 1504. I've given it an hour on the rolling road and I must say the slow running is absolutely superb

The addition of the Manor and 15xx serves to highlight a problem I have mentioned before - the lack of standardisation with the sound function. To get around this I have an A3+ sized table which is in the fiddleyard. This is the latest version:

Danemouth Loco Roster.pdf

I notice I tend not to bother with some function e.g. Safety valve, shovelling coal etc.

I also find that after about 30 minutes I tend to turn the sound off, especially when wearing my new hearing aids!

The thing I do like is the inertia in the sound locos, it makes driving the more like the real thing.

Little Johnny and his brother Fred are having a fortnights holiday in Danemouth with their parents and have persuaded their Dad to taking them trainspotting one afternoon - Mummy is glad of the break 😁

Z6A_1258.jpg.31e815afa3009aa46895e0ccd942305d.jpg

The first train arriving is 6412 with an autocoach

Well Little Johnny and Fred holiday is now over and it's time to go home, by train naturally. They have persuaded their parents to come to the station a little early to see the goods train that runs immediately before their train. They have a surprise, Dukedog 9022 with a couple of PMVs which it will exchange for the Siphon in the loading bay.

9022 runs over the run around crossover and picks up the Siphon and returns to its train

Having drawn out from the station it pushes the PMVs into the loading siding

Z6A_1347.jpg.35b524e8b5880b81da16a419e0d70258.jpg

Meanwhile their train arrives pulled by Class 22 6326 - two corridor coaches that will be added to the London express at the junction.

Z6A_1348.jpg.e9a74923855aff9852f9f9c80a44bfcd.jpg

The Dukedog departs and 6326 runs around its train

Their holiday is over as the train departs

Little Johnny and Fred saw 11 of Danemouth's 21 locos on their holiday. This is because Danemouth operates under:

Rule 1 (Modified)

This rule states that any rolling stiock that appeared on BR(W) between 1956 and 1964 can appear at Danemouth whether or not appropriate.

Incidentally the Dukedog hadn't been run for some time and was a little reluctant - it has since spent an hour on the rolling road 😁

Like many on RMWeb I've bought rolling stock that is now surplus to requirements, as it happens I have nine coaches in this category. At one time I was going to run Danemouth as two separate periods, early crest and late crest. I also envisaged trains longer than the two coaches & NPCS that I now run.

So today I thought I would give a couple of Carmine and Cream coaches a run. Lets assume that it's a busy bank holiday and all sorts of coaches have been dragged out from the back of carriage sidings 😁

Here they are behind pannier 9479

Really enjoying these updates - the short trains / long platform combination really makes Danemouth work in a way so many layouts don’t manage to.  Thank you for sharing the operating photos.

Did love this opening line too:

Although I’m currently fortunate to be able to run much longer trains, there will come a time when that’s not possible.  Danemouth has shown that the operational fun can be had just as much with shorter services if that’s the compromise required.

Thank you.
