Any plans to 'weather' it a tad with powders or an airbrush? Ian
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted August 2, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 2, 2021 Thanks Ian. The plan is to give the panels a spray of matt varnish and install them on the layout as is. Weathering will take place after that using both airbrush and powders to hopefully remove the uniformness of the brickwork extents. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted August 14, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 14, 2021 (edited) The retaining wall elements have been fixed in place (with some trimming) and the girders that will “support” the skew bridge fabricated using Plastruct I section and plasticard strips. The basic bridge design is as per the Sketchup images below. The actual bridge involves curved tracks above and below, as per the photo above, so the geometry will be different to the sketches. Completed cross beam structure. In the real bridge, the cross beams would span clear across the lower track from retaining wall to retaining wall beneath the bridge deck of the upper track. On the layout, this bridge deck is a strip of baseboard so the beams are truncated where they meet this strip. This will be hidden when the skew girders are placed atop the beams, hopefully giving the illusion that they continue below. An example of this type of bridge construction (minus the Bailey Bridge part) are the railway bridges at St. John’s in London as illustrated in this thread on RMWeb. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted August 21, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 21, 2021 (edited) More work on the overbridge this morning... The retaining walls next to the tunnel mouth are yet to be fixed in place - just fitted loosely for now. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted September 12, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 12, 2021 Part of the layout will feature a river valley with the upper level lines crossing on a viaduct at the rear of the scene and the lower level lines over a stone arched bridge. The arched bridge was made using two Hornby “River Bridges” as the basis with wooden pier extensions and cardboard stonework. How the bridge was made is described here. I like the way to 'sank' the building into the hardstanding. Make it all look that bit more convincing. Ian 1

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 15, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 15, 2022 Point motors installed for the three-way point. There is a baseboard support joist directly underneath the turnout so surface mounted motors are required. These will be “hidden” beneath container tool stores. The containers will be suitably distressed and weathered. Concrete roadway paving has been “laid” to be the control box area. This is made from thick cardboard, sealed with pva and then airbrushed a suitable concrete colour. Further road “weathering” will be done once the initial paint coat has cured. Darius, I really like those 'rail' barriers, nice idea. However, I think I prefer them in 'au natural' rusty colour. Great use of off-cuts of rail, of which I have plenty.
