The Kelsby Light Railway; or, Red's Hopeful Layout

I wouldn't mind too much if they stuck to stashing, but my experience is that they will shred anything vaguely shreddable in order to make bedding, and for tiny creatures they seem to make an awful lot of bedding, the amount an elephant might need.

Before I converted the garage to a utility/layout room, and was using it to store things after moving house, they totally wrecked an expensive car child seat by shredding the upholstery and safety harness, and reduced an entire boxful of toddler clothes to threads ...... I'm now less sentimental about them than I used to be!

EDIT: Hold on.... it's got an up and over at each end ...... brick one end up, and put an ordinary single domestic door in, if you can. Then create a studding wall inside he other, something that can be removed if/when you sell-up and move.

No no no.... :nono:

He builds a big Through Station in the garage, and in the summer opens both doors and connects it to the rest of the railway running around the grounds outside... :jester: :sungum:

A sad day here in Norfolk.

Kelsby V1 has met its end.
Moments like this often bring contemplation with them. I think to the future, and what it will bring at the new house. This is not the end.
So raise a toast to Kelsby V1.

I've been on an adventure!

Some edited highlights from this year's King's Lynn Model Railway Show, which I attended with the inimitable Martin S-C. Sorry if some of the photos aren't very clear as my phone started to overheat partway through.

I also purchased a few items which I will post on the Fumbling Bench and Unsound Buildings threads...

Been a while since I did a real post on this thread talking about something layout design related.

Been mulling over a few ideas for the V2 layout, now that the move is starting in earnest. With the far expanded space, I've been trying to work out a layout. The thing is, and this is something I've not really talked about, I rarely totally plan... anything. Anything at all. I start with a rough idea, and I improv and bodge until I get roughly where I want to be or to an alternative design that I like the look of. (Keep your plans flexible, guys. No plan survives contact with the enemy intact.)
So the plan is that the first two boards of V1 will sit in the middle of the room with the top-right corner against the wall. The rest of the layout will form a rough figure-6 around the edge of the garage with it as the top of the loop. (Does that make sense? Hope it does.)
Anyway, after the KLMRS, I got plenty of ideas for how to do various items in my layout in terms of space optimisation and that sort of thing. Definitely food for thought. Especially this particular layout which I can't remember the name of, which has got me thinking about the river dock (or would it technically be a wharf or quay? I'm not a boatman so I have no idea about the exact terminology) at Hewe and how to make it look:

Finally, a proper post for the first time in months.

This is a concept for Berkham Station, laid out on a coffee table in my room. Admiral Horatio Nelson and the blood and custards are for scale. Over bridge is Hornby Dublo, workshop buildings are a mix of Ratio and Sarissa Precision, coal office is Wills I think, goods shed is Ratio, platforms are Dapol. The thoughts and input of you guys as always is greatly appreciated.

MAJOR UPDATE TIME!

After a year in the wilderness, Kelsby station returns! It's going to need some TLC after being in storage for all this time and the setup is only temporary at this time, but like some kind of bonkers phoenix the Kelsby Light Railway rises from the ashes.

Nice to see Kelsby making a return Red.  :good_mini:

Thank you. Nice to be working on it again.

I'm surprised I've not got any comments yet on the fact I've used the same putty that I use as filler on my locos to build up the scenery. I know that sort of thing really riles up some people, but as someone with more experience in clay sculpting than carving foam or wood I find it much easier to work with.

If that's what you prefer to work with then I don't see any problem.  It is your layout afterall.

Indeed. And it is actually very good at it too. It's durable, solid and paints easily as it's car body filler, and has the consistency of playdough when wet and sands well when dry so it's easy to work with. Makes landscaping take a fraction of the time and I can smack the end result with a hammer without damaging it, though working it does leave you with sticky fingers afterwards.

The latest addition to the collection has arrived, and it's pretty significant.

For those not aware of who KonectBus are, they're an incredibly Norfolk bus company based just down the road from me at Dereham. I had no idea LFE did a KonectBus as Norfolk stuff is very few and far between in most respects.

Also a nice view of my crummy 10-year-old laptop and a cameo from my cat at the back.

LOL fair enough. Say hello to RMWeb, Nyx!

I have three cats living in my house with me actually, but Nyx is the one that's usually wandering around. This photo is from this morning, although I've shown pictures of the other two on here before.

Looks like a rather nicer space than I seem to recall you had previously. :good:

The makings of a space that many railway modellers would give their arm for, in fact.

Thanks muchly, you're too kind. The space is about 16ft x 10ft, and the layout I plan to go in a figure 6 around the room with the top of the 6 to the right of where the camera is.

Kelsby had continued to evolve, though still far from finished and not in its final position. It only sits here for now so I have room for -

- Board 2, which remains in roughly the same state in which you guys last saw it as of writing this.
