It is looking like Class 37 + 4 are doing Cardiff to Rhymney from May for quite some time, so no rush to see them.............

.

0724 & 0745 ex Rhymney MFO

1701 & 1731 ex Cardiff Central MFO

.

spare 37 to stable at Rhymney, and will drop onto one the stable d stock  of one of the arrivals ex-Cardiff each evening to work to Cardiff the following morning.

.

THerefore, each loco is used every two days.

.

no plans at present for Saturday workings........but never say never !

As for the Cl.769 it remains at Canton.

.

There are concerns that the drivers seat is not one minute fire retardent, required on routes with tunnels exceeding 1,000yds or is it 1,000m in length.

.

Additional concerns surround it being out of gauge at certain points on the Rhymney line should the suspension fails on one side. I'm told one pinch point is in the Cardiff Queen St. area.

.

Another concern is over the rescue of a unit, should one fail......current local thinking is that four (4) Cl.150/2 units will be required to rescue a failed Cl.769.Abstracting  4x 150/2 units would cause "problems" elsewhere on the TfW network.

.

There is a feeling amongst operations staff that the 769s would be better deployed on the Ebbw Vale services .

153 units cascaded from GWR are being deployed to West Wales services, allowing 14x units to move to the Cardiff area as further cover for the 4 Cl.150/2 units moving to the Wrexham-Bidston-Liverpool service, a contractual or franchise requirement.

.

However, the whole TfW 14x fleet is non-PRM compliant, and a big hole would appear in the TfW roster come December as their is little or no chance of derogation.

According to the latest newsletter of the Shewsbury and Aberystwyth line users group, only 11 of the new 2-car units are to be fitted with ERTMS, which is contrary to the announcements of enhanced capacity as it will mean fewer seats, but a slightly higher total capacity because of more standing space. This is stated to go against the franchise requirement of no standing on journeys of over 20 miles as that covers the journey between Welshpool and Shrewsbury which in the last three years has gained considerable commuter traffic. The newsletter says that originally all the new units, both 2 and 3 car were to have been fitted with ERTMS.

So on your journey to the Cambrian coast in the next decade expect to stand. Some of those Saturday services are among the heaviest loaded trains on the whole Welsh network, I understand. Until the more-or-less hourly service was introduced the train at about nine-thirty east from Aberystwyth in the summer was six coaches to cope with the traffic.

MFO means the loco-hauled trains only run on Monday and Friday (which contradicts the next sentence !) - Is that right ?

Weekdays only, i.e. Monday to Friday Only. Not Saturdays.

.

Next week's "ghost services" are already in the system, as shown in a previous post above.

Wrexham station isn't very long. Will a 3 coach train just about squeeze in?

Istr the Ex Underground stock being a bit shorter than the class 150 vehicles, although the overall length of a 3 car unit will probably be a bit longer than a 2 car 150. Wrexham Central Station platform is officially 4 Chains long (so 88 Yards, or 80.5 Metres) so they should fit ok.

Always thought Wrexham Central would make an ideal micro-layout, with a perfect scenic break, but a bit limited operationally though!

Thanks for the clarification br2975. (It might be worth editing the original post to show SX rather than MFO).

I heard a rumour that the 37s plus carriages will work a Fishguard and return service between rush hours. If true, it's a good day out.

Well, 37418 has been to Carmarthen on crew training within the last couple of weeks, Rob Masterman videoed it.

You could always use it as an inspiration for a fictional heavy rail-narrow gauge interchange by putting in a narrow gauge line on the right, with run round and a (narrow) platform.  With all the RTR 009 stuff available now, and a fair bit of Arriva Wales units out there it would make for an unusual but plausible layout.

It was something I was considering to replace "Kings Oak", a local pottery made some lovely collectable "Under Milkwood" buildings that were approximately OO scale and I envisaged using them to create a low relief backscene with the old station yard turned over to the narrow gauge, the old station building housing the booking office and tourist information centre, and the Arriva bus shelter halt in an adjacent platform, and calling it "Llaregub", an ideal name for a small, operationally simple layout!

  • 2 weeks later...

37418 together with a scratch take of Mk.Iis  (including FOs and a buffet) was due to make a Cardiff Canton - Rhymney and return "ghost run" last evening.I

.

Unfortunately, a lineside sink hole has closed the line North of Bargoed, trapping at least one unit at Rhymney, and as a result 37418s run was caped.
