A Paddington bound set gets a helping hand at Westbury...

Ouch - that's a bit cruel on an HST thread!

So, while we're at it (!), here's a similar shot from 1989..

47611 'Thames' heads an ailing HST on a Paignton-Newcastle train near journey's end passing Tyne Yard, Gateshead on 1st July 1989. The power cars are 43107 and 43078. I later discovered that the 47 had been attached at Derby.

While we’re sticking the boot in to the good old HST, there must be plenty of loco classes that have been called upon to haul one in passenger service. Off the top of my head, I know the following classes have: 20, 25, 31, 33, 37, 43, 45, 47, 50, 57, 58, 59, 67, 86, 89, 91. Any others?

I see to remember an impressive video of a 59 also hauling a failed HST... Whilst moving its own loaded stone train.

I found this one on Flickr. (Not mine- All credit to John Turner)

43002

It was a long link so I've run it through a shortener.

Kind regards,

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far trying to identify the HST power car in my post #144.

It seems that the overall yellow end, no buffers and no aerial might make this one unique(?) so I'm hoping someone else has a picture they can share.

Cheers

A great thread this.  Like others have mentioned, I was not really a fan of the HST's in the days of 'Real' loco-hauled trains, however as loco haulage gradually got taken over by units etc I started to take a bit more interest. I have been going through the images I have and will add some to this thread.  Here is the first one to start things off, an unidentified MML set in Church Yard Sidings, St. Pancras on 6th June 2001. I will gradually add more pics over time.

Regards, John

Here we have 43005 First Great Western power car on short term hire to Midland Mainline for the Project Rio St. Pancras - Manchester service.  A complete set was borrowed and consisted of power cars 43005 & 43009.  The set did get split and there was one occasion when a set was running with old and new (at the time) MML livery, virgin & FGW, so a great excuse to mix and match the HST sets on your layout.

Hi Matt

I think you've cracked it!

According to Commoner's post # 149 there were 4 candidates with the full yellow ends and no buffers - 43002/3/4/5.

From pictures we've now seen or which have been reported, 3 and 5 had the aerial at that time, so it's not one of those.

There's a pic on the RPA site of 43004 dated 20th October 1988 which shows it also without an aerial, but still in 'normal' livery. (Mine was taken on 29th October.)

So I'm pretty confident mine is 43002 as per the picture you unearthed and kindly uploaded.

(Unless someone knows differently?)

Cheers

Class 91’s have, I don’t know about 87’s or 86’s but a work colleague had said he remembers a 90 on one but I couldn’t say.

There is one where a 59 is hauling it’s own load and pushing a HST. Fantastic machines are those 59’s.

86s have, remember going to Crewe one Sunday to sort out 43159 which was coming from Holyhead with a smashed droplight and other engine related problems and an 86 was attached at Crewe to work through to Euston.

That's why the BR tag line was 'We're getting there!', they did eventually, rather than detrain everyone onto the next service.

When I was a driver at Euston ,we dragged a set to Crewe with a class 86, not because of a failure but to save diesel! Think it must have been about 1996-97 in the Inter-City sector days (Just before the Virgin take over).

Two images of 43197, first one at Derby 4th July 2002 on northbound  Virgin Cross Country service.   Next one is at Cricklewood Depot on 12th Oct 2003 in de-branded Virgin livery in use with Midland Mainline for the Rio Manchester service.

that last pic is interesting, I've never seen the guard's office window of the TGS opaque like that.

Was it a common modification?

I don't think it's a modification, it could be just a reflection of the sign opposite.

43087 at St. Pancras 10th September 2003 on a Manchester service.  Note the mix of the then new Midland Mainline blue livery, de-branded ex Virgin and MML green.
