ISTR the mk3s having 2-stage braking whereby there's standard air braking up to a certain speed but above that, a higher brake pressure operates to allow sufficient braking at high speed.

So if, for some reason the higher pressure isn't available, then max speed is reduced to 100mph

I think it's something along those lines but anyone please feel free to correct me!:)

@Bob Reid will probably know as I'm sure this sort of thing was mentioned in the context of the E-G push-pulls

Erm, the other way round, on both counts

It was the power cars that had the two stage brake, not the coaches, and brake pressure was reduced - about half normal - at high speed. Normal brake pressure then applied below 90.

It was to reduce wheel slide on the leading p/c as less adhesion was available at high speed. It was discontinued as improved Wheel Slide Prevention was fitted

EMR's 43257 trails 43310 on 1C43 Leeds - St Pancras service, seen approaching Thurnscoe. Note the strange formation of the stock, which completely ruins the effect of the VTEC livery.

Chiltern Green?

Close.....  East Hyde, which is south of there.  It's where the Midland crosses the old GN branch.  Funnily enough, I retook that shot today, in full sun.  Makes a huge difference!

Cheers,
