On the eastern approach to Newcastle, an Edinburgh to London Kings Cross HST powers through Heaton on 8th August 1980, three days before the station closed.

Yesterday was the first day of Scotrail's 5 car hst sets running in revenue service. 

 

Only a couple of sets have been formed so far, with one running to and from Aberdeen today. 

 

43149 leads a Queen Street to Aberdeen service towards Stonehaven with 43003 on the rear. 28/9/21

Get thee to Munich!

SWMBO and myself arrived in Munich from Blighty today on the way to see family in Bavaria. Leaving Munich Hauptbanhof for Ingolstadt (double decker regio pushed by a class 102 E-Lok since you ask) I was gobsmacked to see just outside the Hauptbanhof one of the HST twin powercar sets that I think are being spot hired as locos. Alas I saw it too late to get a photo. It seemed to be involved with an engineering train. Maybe there will be one at Ingolstadt yard. There in 25 minutes. Doh! Just saw Dagworth's post above. The very same pair I guess so I suspect I won't be seeing any at Ingolstadt.

The vehicle it is sharing the siding with is some sort of hotel / restuarant car I am told.

As I understand it, those on the NMT are short term lease while NR’s own are refurbished/upgraded. As the NMT is intensively used and with a surplus of power cars I guess it made sense. I know Colas are looking to use them going forward but I think NR is missing a trick not creating another NMT or two. The current fleet is struggling to cope, there are some interesting variations across the fleet in terms of data output and there is little slack in schedules which is causing issues, added reliability of late hasn’t been great on the southern region, which also impacts other regions.

I understood the previous power car to be 43480, which is now in Germany, so I'm guessing this is a different power car.

There are two in Germany currently I thought.

Here’s a video of todays 2U20 service from Penzance to Cardiff arriving at and leaving from Bodmin parkway. Service was led by hst power car Trematon castle and at the rear of the service was Dunster Castle.

Looking very smart, Locomotive Intercity Limited's (a subsidiary of Locomotive Services Limited) 43049 'Neville Hill' passes through Deighton on 10th November 2021, heading from its namesake as 0Z43 to Crewe HS.

 

 

With Northern Trains 158794 keen to photo-bomb with 2W08, Huddersfield to Bradford Interchange, via Halifax.
