EddieB
A couple of photos posted in the "4th October" thread generated some interest in the composition of HST sets in their early days of operation. While I appreciate that these photos aren't of the best technical quality, they may help further study of that period. The photos below were all taken on 22nd January 1977.  Starting of at Reading, two of 253 017 followed by two of 253 009.    Moving on to Swindon, 253 010 followed by the leading power car of 253 003. (These duplicate those posted in the other thread, earlier).

EddieB
Finally (for the time being), 254 001 at Bounds Green, 15th September 1977. (I don't have a record of the class 31).
RMweb Premium Commoner Posted October 8, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 8, 2018 Brilliant Eddie. Thanks for posting. 253 017 on 22/01/77 has 2 TRSBs, unlike 253 009 which was correctly formed with a TRUK+TRSB. The WR ran a few sets with 2 TRSBs as the delivery of TRUKs was delayed. Obviously as more sets were delivered the availability of surplus TRSBs diminished and by end of the winter 76, the formation became a rarity. An interesting vantage point for your photographs at Reading as well. Looks a murky day which didn't improve much judging from the shots taken later at Swindon.  The shot of 254 001 at Bounds Green is also a rarity. Was practically brand new. Am I right in thinking you were on the flyover, or is my memory of the layout there playing tricks?

Dr Gerbil-Fritters
There doesn't seem to be many XC liveried sets in this thread? One of the better recent paint schemes. The current garish swooshy EMT is one of the worst.
