Peter Kazmierczak
Â Kevin, The photo of SC43087 is certainly pre-November 1979, as that's when I got my Olympus camera and started using colour film. Â It could well be the middle of '79, with the ex-works power cars returning to EC from Derby Loco with new trailers in tow. If I find the date I'll let you know. RMweb Premium Commoner Posted June 17, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 17, 2018 3 shots of power cars painted experimentally in Executive Livery prior to its application fleet wide from early 1985 onwards.  43129 with solid Inter-City 125 lettering on Tuesday 12th June 1984 arriving at Reading with the 10.25 Bristol TM-Paddington formed 43129/151, 41126/5, 40324, 42260/61/59, 44030.   43126 with outline Inter-City 125 lettering, at Bristol TM having arrived with 14.30 from Paddington on Sunday 10th June 1984. Set formed, 43126/130, 44028, 42253/2/1, 40322, 41122/21.  43151 with outline Inter-City 125 lettering but no unit number, pictured at Reading working the 06.18 Penzance-Paddington. Set formed 43151/028, 41031/2, 40327, 42045/6/7, 44015.  It's also worth noting how how the trailer livery on experimental and final versions varies, with the very light grey on the roof above above the class designation colour on the former, giving way to black on the final version.
royaloak
That's a really interesting shot Peter. The power car has a rain strip below the windscreen and this mod wasn't fitted from new or at overhaul fleet wide until 1981. A couple of WR power cars acquired the mod at overhaul, presumably on an experimental basis in the autumn of 1978, these being W43046/48, while W43028 also received it during a collision damage repair in October 1978. Do you have an accurate date for the shot? If new, it would be sometime in May 78, or if following overhaul sometime in May/June 1979. But it doesnt have the exhaust deflector, interesting.
Peter Kazmierczak
Think the first "Executive" set appeared in September '83 - used for filming on the Calder Valley if I recall correctly.  I remember the first set of trailers being shunted at Litchurch Lane by Cl.08 early one bright and crisp September morning and thinking how different they looked. The first two power cars also operated a "back-to-back" test run from Derby Loco to Burton around the same time.
RMweb Premium Commoner Posted June 17, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 17, 2018 But it doesnt have the exhaust deflector, interesting.  Exhaust Deflectors weren't fitted from new until the the very closing stages of the first Class 254 build in spring 79. Their retrospective fitting to power cars built without also started in the spring/summer of 1979 and was somewhat adhoc with certain power cars going through Works and leaving without receiving the mod. The programme of retro-fitting was completed in April 81 when 43052 was the last to be treated. Of course W43012/13 were the first to have them, fitted experimentally in October 1977, although W43012 lost its deflector after a fire in the exhaust area in May 1978. E43060 also gained the mod experimentally in November 1978. I always thought they lost them at this point; but obviously my memory is shot.   Here is another IC power car, but with an alternative cab front livery.  This is August 1997 at Atherstone.

Peter Kazmierczak
Super pics as ever Trev.  Judging by the visible formation (TS, TS, TF, TS, TF...……) I'd say that your final pic was a trial run, rather than a public passenger service.

Absolutely agree Peter. Trevor brilliantly captured the 254 sets at the start of the ECML HST era in 1978/79. The ER seemed to do a better job than the WR, in keeping their sets in sparkling condition. E43068 had been in traffic for 6 months or so by 1st June 78, the date of Trevor's shot and looks immaculate externally. Perhaps it was because the ER depots were better equipped?  43086/87, 42189/7, 41102, 42178, 41098 were on an Acceptance test run from Heaton Depot on 31.05.78, following delivery the week previous. Peter Kazmierczak
Almost exactly 39 years ago - 16th June 1979. A trio of Cl.254s await departure from King's Cross. E43056 in plat 2, E43061 in plat 3 and another in plat 4.  None have the smoke deflectors or cab-front rainstrip as yet.   Seems just like yesterday..... I was more interested in the Deltics at the time, so this line-up must've caught my eye. Trev52A
@Peter Kazmierczak & Commoner  Thanks for the input on my HST with 43086 leading passing York - sounds right! I will amend mine accordingly. Incidentally an enlargement of the slide shows the prefix SC rather than E - is that unusual?  Here are more at Newcastle:  43057 Bounds Green in 'Executive' livery departs south in 1988 or 1989 - for some reason I had taken the slide out of the cardboard mount and tranferred it to a plastic one, but didn't transfer the date! Can anyone pin it down, please?  43096 in 'Swallow' livery on 1st August 1995  Livery contrasts on 18th August 1997 with 43038 and 43198  Trevor

Peter Kazmierczak
Although HSTs were a fairly regular sight in Derby, what with the RTC where they were designed and developed, the Loco Works where power cars were serviced and Litchurch Lane where all the trailers were built, it wasn't until the start of the winter 1981/82 timetable that any actually called at the station in passenger service.  Here we see the very first HST to call at Derby, on 5th October 1981, with the 07.00 Bristol - Leeds . It arrived 8 minutes early and the welcoming party on platform 1 included Radio Derby, who broadcast the event. Their radio car can be seen on the platform on the right.   For any number crunchers, the formation was:  43166, W41147, *40001, W42258, W42254, W42266, W42262, W44000, 43165  Note that the power cars and the TRSB didn't carry a W prefix. jonny777
What a great thread this is turning out to be. Old and new, plus everything else in between.   For the S&D 150 at Shildon in Aug 1975 the prototype appeared in full formation.     But for Rainhill 150 in May 1980 a shortened HST was one of the exhibits.
