sem34090
So, a cakebox. I fancied doing something different - lots of people are following the traditional route of modelling a scene of a railway, or fields, but I have yet to see one quite like the ones I'm planning. This is my first idea, roughly laid out (to scale) to check that it will possibly work: It just so happens that (I don't know the scale!) an LBSCR Class A1 Cab can be made to fit the 8" x 8" x 6" envelope, albeit with a very tiny amount of compression width-ways. The plan will be to fully model at least three sides of the cab, perhaps all four (removable back) if I'm feeling ambitious. The walls will probably be foamboard and I will probably try and paint the outside in full IEG or Umber. Whilst I was at it I also wanted to see if a coach compartment would work. This is a slightly compressed version of an LSWR Third Class Compartment (Taken from a photo of Brake Third No.1520). So, my ideas. I don't think anyone has done ones like these, so I thought it was about time I made a thread and 'took' the ideas before anyone else did! Your thoughts please, Ladies and Gentlemen... Guest ShildonShunter
Hi Sem fantastic idea i like the looks and sounds of this and will be watching with interest.
sem34090
I have a few other ideas I'm mulling over, but these two seemed to be the most likely to happen. I may do a third one to represent the rear of the train.
TurboSnail
I trust you'll be incorporating LCD screens to show the scenery passing the cab windows? I like the large scale thing, lots of detail to add!
RMweb Gold BlueLightning Posted June 13, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 13, 2018 Fantastic looking project!! I have to second TurboSnail's idea of LCD screens to show the moving scenery though!! Gary
sem34090
There will be static scene showing the loco sat in a yard, as the budget won't stretch to LCD screens, more's the pity.
RMweb Premium Northroader Posted June 13, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 13, 2018 I suppose you’ll need a crew or a guard to meet the requirement of two railway items, (is it?) it’s a different approach in any case, good luck with it.
sem34090
There's... The Regulator, Reverser, Water Gauges, Injectors, Condensors... they're all railway items!
009 micro modeller
I like the idea of this. I did think about doing a coach compartment interior but I couldn't make it fit in 1:12 scale, which I was going to use. Are you going to model the roof all the way across or just on one side as a cutaway?
sem34090
I'm not sure if I'm even going to do the coach yet!
RMweb Premium Annie Posted June 15, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 15, 2018 This is a great idea Sem. I've seen dioramas done as a view through a building's window, but doing one as a cab view would really be quite something.
sem34090
I'll try and get started at some point then.
Marly51
Go for it Sem!! The coach compartment idea reminds me of Eric Ravilious’s print Aberdeen Art Gallery aagm.co.uk And another print by his wife Tirzah Garwood persephonebooks.co.uk Edited June 28, 2018 by Marly51

sem34090
I've never come across that one, but WOW! Perfectly encapsulates what I'm planning, albeit mine will be based on either an LSWR third or and SECR third as I feel the depth is too shallow to permit a First class compartment (having spent much of the weekend travelling around in a Stroudley First! ) Edited June 28, 2018 by sem34090
