Distillery yard micro layout - back out on the exhibition circuit

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

The layout is 99% done now with the only thing left to do is to make the skirt for the layout but I'm awaiting pay day to secure funds for the materials needed for that. In the meantime I've been continuing to run trains frequently and I've got a friend coming over tomorrow for an operating session so you might see some visitors pop up here. In the meantime here are some pictures of the 26 with the freight. IMG_20190203_145608895.jpg.baaed6118bdb952b790531f76253464e.jpgIMG_20190203_144207.jpg.b4a1e1b295f6d49db02b8345fb29728f.jpg thanks for looking ☺️

I've got another update here for you now guys. basically its just been finishing off a few projects before the exhibition next weekend....... crikey its come round quick!!!!!! first of all ive finished off painting those modelu figures. There is a total of 3 on the layout but id like to add a trainspotter in the foreground at some point in the future. The figures were just painted with a mix of acrylic colours mixed by myself to get he right shade followed by a black wash to add areas of shadow. IMG_20190212_200055854.jpg.356fd85fe15983793165fe647676713c.jpgIMG_20190212_200037063.jpg.ce97e98e4486fbd365862ffd71968b0b.jpgive also finished off the barrel wagons load which i will post a picture of down below because it appears that i cant upload 3 pictures in 1 post.

Back today with some more progress. I've finished off the stock box which I started ages ago. Made out of a large plastic tube from Yorkshire trading I got for a fiver and most of an old foam camping role mat it's quite a cheap stock boxy costing me a fraction of what commercial ones would've cost me. I can fit all my stock in it with a spare row left over (my excuse will be to fill it with a class 24 sometime in the future ;) ) so it's the ideal size. IMG_20190213_210405408.jpg.054c2b7e228323dda4a6b13b9b97283d.jpg It certainly seems robust enough so the only thing left to do is to make a label for it with distillery yard written on it so no one can get confused at exhibitions. Speaking of exhibitions here are the details of the show that I will be exhibiting at York. It would be great if any of you wanted to come along. I've got some friends who are hopefully going to make it as well to help me operate but they know plenty about the layout too so should be able to answer any of your questions. Screenshot_20190128-162835.png.225e1bc218fa724a19a680ac8731ff32.png Any questions about the exhibition itself drop a comment down below and I'd be happy to help. I've been in attendance of it for the last 3 years now and it's a very friendly exhibition and all for a charity too, an even better reason to go to it. I'm very excited about the exhibition and am currently waiting till payday (Friday) when I can order the stuff I need to make a skirt for the layout. Thanks for looking. :)

So at the moment the exhibition next weekend is my only show booked for 2019 but if you'd like to see distillery yard at your exhibition/event message me. Well here are a couple firsts for the layout. This western engine seems to have got quite lost...IMG_20190212_190124_618.jpg.0a722c64898bd65438ec6cf50a4273d2.jpg (the western engine isn't  mine by the way) And since when did a dmu run to the distillery??IMG_20190204_164355296_BURST000_COVER_TOP.jpg.6c324193ab8d33dd8c807999b92da266.jpg Since it's pay day today I've also ordered the material stuff I need to make the skirt for the layout. Thanks to the magic of Amazon it should arrive tomorrow and I can start work on it. Hope my sewing skills are up to scratch! After doing some longer operating sessions I'm finding that I'd quite like a detachable shelf to rest the controller on so that might be a job for the evening.

Thanks Stu70 :). Well one week to go and yesterday I finished off the last bits of wood work and also got some trains running. First up is the wooden surround on fiddle yard extension bit thingy. A job that has needed doing for quite some time now and also it should mean that you can't drive a loco off the end of the layout. Screenshot_20190216-090844.png.67e12eaeed732794d506529d798c41f5.png and I also made a removable controller stand/holder. I found that after operating the layout for an hour or so my hand got quite tired and it wasn't very convenient to have to hold the controller and out stock on at the same time so this is my solution. It's bolted on with 75mm long M5 winged nuts bought cheaply from my local DIY store with an off cut of a line baton with some 5.5mm ply on top.Screenshot_20190216-090837.png.1e645cef98417072d06c70ed3ee273eb.png It seems to be strong enough and is very convenient. I'll probably paint both of these bits of woodwork in the same paint as the fascia to blend it all together. Now onto the running. More thorough testing and everything is running great. I'm just giving some of the stock that isn't normally run a run like the small yellow panel 20. Here a few pictures though:IMG_20190215_215326_369.jpg.39aefccc3f4bbb20ecb0ee12cd0f0308.jpgIMG_20190215_212822330.jpg.99970dd78f9e58d262464bb42a6f9da4.jpg Thanks for looking and more progress soon. :)

Today I finished off making the curtain which suits the layout really well I think. I didn't manage to get any pictures of it though as the lighting wasn't great at all. I did a full set up and take down of the layout carrying it (and all the gear) down 2 flights of stairs and back up again to simulate a wall from a carpark to an exhibition hall but this distance is likely to be reduced in real life. The set up time was just under 25 minutes and the pack down time just over 20 minutes. I'm really happy how it all works and once set up the layout looks fairly professional if I may say so myself. Once set up I have the layout a quick play and spotted these 2 troublesome 20s hanging about. Presumably loitering around whilst the peckett shunted their trains into place.

Great photograph!

Pleased your trial run went well. Highlights the advantages of a micro layout, especially when packing up after a long exhibition!

Thanks guys for your encouraging comments and got to agree with you Ian, cant go wrong with a type 2. Last night I painted the removable control panel and fiddle yard extension stick. I used the same black chalkboard paint as I used on the fascia of the layout. IMG_20190218_075409463.jpg.062f46b24a0afe9a7690433903225384.jpgIve also begun to sort out an exhibition tool box. This is what I've got in it so far: soldering iron, electrical tape, superglue, track magic, duct tape and a set of screw drivers. Would you advise taking anything else?IMG_20190218_075425211.jpg.d3be89c699415bf57fd82c0bf49248cc.jpg

AHH yes can't forget my gauge master wheel cleaner. That's an absolute essential. And pliers as well and also a fiver glass pencil worth remembering them. Thanks for the help guys. By the way I'm just sorting out a YouTube video showing the exhibition prep which should be uploaded later. I'll drop a link down for those who'd like to watch it.
