Thanks for the Birkenhead photos Dave.

Brings back memories of travelling to Birkenhead gas works training school for my intermediate year gas fitting course. Wigan Wallgate to Liverpool Exchange, walk down the long pedestrian tunnel at James St (is that still there ?) then a 'lecky under the river to Birkenhead Central (side of the electric sheds above) and a short walk round the corner to work. Occasionally I would walk to the ferry & catch that if we finished early / started late.

I remember loads of Cammell Laird ship workers getting on, all wearing clogs & flat caps & smoking Woodbines !!

I liked the LMS electric units, and the Liverpool system back then - this was pre the loop & link lines being built, and the closure of Exchange station.

Ah, old Birkenhead shed. I did my guards training course there in 1973, long before the e.m.u's , of course.

EMUs were only there for staging prior to cutting up at Birkenhead Docks

One of my very first memories (in life) was travelling on one of those merseyrail electric units with my mum and dad, me being in a pushchair and screaming my lungs out when we went underground and an old lady offering me some of her dolly mixtures to calm me down!

I think I was about 2 years old but I remember it vividly as the lights went out over the joints and the squeal of the rail on the curves, must have disturbed me that much it’s etched in my brain, I’m no better now when I go into a tunnel, have to calm myself down with sweeties!

Now the new software is in place - time to try a further posting !

I'm still having trouble uploading to Flickr, apparently our high speed Broadband should be here within the next month or two - we'll see - which should cure that issue. I scanned another couple of hundred photos during the blackout but need to get the notes for them sorted out.

Ok - that worked, so I'll add the rest of the post now

Unfortunately these are poor, the scrap line at Swindon was one of those annoying places that I never managed to get a decent shot but they are what they are, including the light leak
