Changes to GST rules from 1st July 2018

Recommended Posts

By pure coincidence, I started a discussion on this topic in the general questions section today, pondering what stance the big UK retailers in this hobby will take to the new rules.

Many points open to interpretation, such as compliance (or not) and any action the Aus government will take (or not)

Hattons for one will be charging the additional 10%. Announced by them yesterday. No doubt other retailers will follow. I doubt it will push buyers to make thier purchases in Australia locally as even with the additional 10% buying from the UK is still significantly cheaper.

The cynical me sees this as purely a money making exercise by the Government and not a scheme to increase domestic sales.

Andy.

Visited Hattons website, they are installing new software apparently but are already doing some strange maths to collect the GST. Seems that Kernow are not collecting the tax - "good on you fellas" . Anybody know if Rails of Sheffield are? In fact is anybody able to make up a definitive list. Could make a big difference where we all shop................

Ebay UK is adding 10% GST to purchases made in UK sent to Australian addresses. This is a double whammy as, of course, you do not receive a VAT reduction on Ebay purchases! A definite reason to slow down purchases ex. UK, especially if people use the Global shiteing programme, which makes shipping ludicrously expensive.

Cheers from WA,

Peter C.

Edit: Just noticed they are charging GST on full price, including postage, surely this is a mistake?

Probably not as they have some sharp practices for instance making a seller use PayPal as a method of payment
