Cross-border upgrade plan

North-south rail services between Belfast and Dublin could be upgraded over the coming years, under a three-stage development strategy agreed by Irish national operator Iarnród Éireann and its Northern Irish counterpart Translink.

 

Launched in Belfast as part of Northern Ireland’s Bus+Train week initiative, the plan envisages investment in both rolling stock and infrastructure to reduce journey times for Enterprise services on the 183 km route from the current 2 h 10 min to ‘potentially 90 min or less’.

For this to happen all you need is money!

 

...and the political will - on both sides of the border.

 

Please note, I'm studiously avoiding expressing a view for, or against, Brexit.

 

However, what happens with cross-border rail services is bound to be affected by what happens with the negotiations - what's said - what's agreed - and how much spirit of cooperation still exists when the negotiations conclude.

 

I can only hope things work out for the best.

Some years ago they costed the Portadown to Derry line at £273million which would have brought trains through Omagh and Strabane again. They said they had no money but look how many millions have gone up in smoke recently - shocking!
