They look like small PL16s!! I wonder if they the design was based off them? These would be a nice size for a model railway.

This particular design  probably dates back to the 1920’s , at 60-70 feet in height , wouldn’t be too imposing on most layouts as well as covering  a broad timeline.

Not too bad then! Are there any plans for them?

I’m looking at one or two more recent “polon” designs .  Future projects are to move away from latticework and focus on building power grid structures which are more straight forward for others to copy and build .

That Ipswich location is very odd, does it have history? The line here appears to be split in to two paralleled circuits running all the way to the site of Cliff Quay power station.

It is indeed strange, I have just been looking at some old maps and even they aren't sure of the alignments. 1960s maps show a different layout to the 1970s, and it's the same with the early 80s too. Then it changes to how the pylons are currently arranged.

Apologies if I've missed this in the previous 46(!) pages, but what are these black-painted "concrete wellies" in this photo?

There was another one nearby which had what appeared to be remnants of concrete in the same places.

It's in a fairly soggy often waterlogged field, but the water would be unlikely to get that high.

They look like extra supports for the base of the tower. As normally the concrete wouldn't go that far up iirc.

It looks to me like three main "spars" for each of the four "legs" (i.e. the bits below the first big horizontals) angle down almost to a point, and the concrete encases the bottom half of those three spars and their cross-bracing pieces.

I should have taken a photo of the more normal-looking ones in the same area for comparison.

(Apologies if my terminology is off - spars and legs is the best I could think of.)

Ahh don’t worry, even I get the terminology wrong sometimes. It is very odd though, maybe there was some extra weight needed for the tower

Some more Pylons near me.

These were all taken "up Luzley" which is a small parcel of green situated between Mossley, Stalybridge and (just about at a push) Ashton-Under-Lyne.

There's  some nice views to be had here but which some would say that are "spoiled" by all the Pylons, to which, I say "at least the keep the windmills away"!

The first was taken on Luzley Road between the Junction Inn and the Hare n Hounds.

This one cant be very tall and would make for a good model on a layout.

Another one taken from Luzley Road.

These next two were taken at the entrance to Ashton Golf Club.

These next two phots (of the same tower) were taken at the entrance to the Hartshead Inn.

A view towards Oldham with Hartshead Pike on the right.

This is what gave Hartshead Power Station its' name.
