I saw it some years ago too and I didn’t believe it either. I guess it was part of a now mothballed PL16 line that’s been singled and replaced with poles.

best regards, Matthew

Last time I passed it was part of a double circuit PL16 line and I can only guess that they needed to alter the line at some point maybe due to the road bring altered and they has that tower spare somewhere else and reused it?

It does seem odd where it is. When I past it it fed into a Blaw Knox PL16DT with half the line left hanging on the L2 and the rest went to some fairly new looking polons. I will check google maps to see if it has changed.

Very nice, I guess that’s based on the one near ebbsfleet? I still have the original prototype though :wink_mini:. In all seriousness though like usual this is absolutely superb modelling, at this rate you could create a model of a substation!

The Eaton Socon substation has one very similar . The first prototype was  challenging to build  as I only had one simple diagram to work from resulting in some guesswork.Using the original National Grid blueprints enabled extra accuracy and detailing . Both models took considerable time to construct but I learned a great deal  from the earlier version . The new tower has also a detachable ground wire tower.

There is an interesting line just north of Coventry (you can see it from the M6). One side has quad wires suspended on double insulators, while the other side is on single insulators with the lower two wires quad, and the top wire double. Is it some form of experiment?

Streetview shows the different insulators, but not the odd double wire -

Hi Suzie, yes these are known about - not sure exactly what they are designated but my money would be on some sort of L2C towers - there is also a known L2C design up in Scotland that was confirmed over on the Fbook Pylon Group the other day by a member who is a linesman and has been working on these Scottish towers recently.

Many years ago - maybe 10 years gulp I went to Coventry to take a closer look at these towers and take some photos of my own. It should be noted if you follow this route towards the next substation at Berkswell it reverts to standard L2 towers for the last few towers.

Cheers Paul

Ok

Now you have really started something. I can't go anywhere without noticing our steely friends. I've never given them  a second glance or even noticed they were there until I read this.  Now I see them everywhere.

Here for your delight are some photos from my recent travels in the local area.

Enjoy

Here are 2 variants of the L3 ST tower!

(Lucky find)

I thought these were L2 ST as well but the sheet for L2 towers shows these or something very similar whereas from memory there is no L3 equivalent. I have seen a few of these ST towers including some at Penwortham.

The L2 variant has a slightly taller peak than the L3 ,

Were you talking about this sheet??

DESIGN_OF_L2_TOWERS_&_FOUNDATIONS-page-001_(3).jpg

Yep thats the one but I agree it does look that bit different on the tower peak and lower cross bracing too. So may be it is the non diagrammed L3 version?

Hi everyone, look what I found over the M69. I'm guessing the motorway came after this balfour beatty line was built as that BICC has been added in, and there is another one in the opposite direction,

I think you’ll find that that BICC L6 is actually a L6M. Same design though. I have some plans for the L6M D30 and D2 if anyone interested please let me know.

Also found this rather (insulator) stretched L2D joining up to an L6 BB DT/DJT tower, which I've never seen before.

Behind, in the other direction is an L2 D40EC

Untitled.png

Very simple story there, the L2 line came first and then they decided to build a L6 line through the L2 line. So the L2 line meets the L6s where the change from twin to quad conductors happens (the rather over engineered L6 in the background).
