Odd use of an D60 tower especially as it seemd to have exceeded the maximum deviation the tower strength is designed for? Anyone got the OS Map and a protractor to check the angle where it turns near Stripe Lane? Further down where the line crosses the ECML there is another L2 D60 then an L3 D60 followed by an L3 D30 that leads to the L3 DT and a ST at the substation.

Cheers Paul

I’m pretty sure they are both acting as D90s. I will have a look though.

Yep looks more than 60 to me. I have been past these a few times but never clocked the increased deviation so given that there does not seem to be an L3 D90 then the greater strength of the L2 D60 and the longer cross arms might well be enough to permit their usage in these circumstances.

That’s what I thought too. I did find it nice to see an L3 D60 and an L2 D60 right next to each other on the same line!

'bout time someone piled on some more phots of Pylons on here!

These were taken on this evenings (short) walk.

Don't worry about social distancing - I had these guys all to my self!!!

This one is very close to the new 25kV feed for the Standedge route's (eventual) electrification.

Although I must point out this was there many years before that new connection was installed.

This is only used as a short connection between two close by sub-stations.

Also close by is another one of the three sub-stations that surrounded the former CEGB Hartsheard power station.

Incidentally, the Huddersfield Narrow canal, passes between the legs of that three armed Pylon. (It was re-opened in 2000 ish, and had to meander around this sub-station that was built on the site of the then closed canal.)

I wonder if there are any other canals passing underneath Pylons?

Another view across the River Tame to the same three armed Pylon.

(The water is dark because of the peat off the moors - honest! There's even fish in it now too.)

Here the Moon is rising, in the East, whilst the Sun is setting behind the camera casting a shadow across the floor of the valley - oh, and there are some Pylons here too!

Just received this in the post a few days ago , both fascinating and very informative.18E0CD8A-93FF-49AD-BB35-BECBF42233F5.jpeg.c7b9c24517f66aeb5a7df65b7ff07eeb.jpeg2D4D46BD-1C57-49BB-8110-D92853DF0398.jpeg.2fce18a361de4ce05723584155231d28.jpegF28DD20A-4BFD-49E5-BCCB-82B355ACEA49.jpeg.b4fdb00d98b9cb9540954b593b0c9263.jpeg09AE0BAE-FEA7-460F-87A7-A75C0ED0EBB1.jpeg.dff38e99bbbb929a19af06042ed0bf6b.jpeg

I wonder of the last photo of of the substation at Bramford being as it mentions the Sizewell-Sundon route. If so then that could be the last BB L6 DT that remains there or it's one of the towers that has been replaced by L12's (nearly all the terminal towers at the substation are now L12s)

Why were the BB L6 DTs’ replaced with L12s’ ?

To be honest I don’t really know. The first lot came when Sizewell B opened as the line was extended further to a new substation and the DT’s were turned into D10’s, then followed by L6M D30’s and then L12 DT’s. At this point the line was modified so the D2’s has their double insulator bundles replaced and the quad bundles on the deviation towers replaced into double bundles, yet still carry a quad line. My only guess is that the towers from this line leading into Bramford were replaced as well. I then visited the substation in 2011 and major work was going on there. A BB L6 D60 was being replaced by an L12 DT acting as a D90 and the EVE L6 DT was also replaced with an L12 DT. Then the BICC L6 line got the treatment and the DT for that line was replaced too as an L12. I remember looking down the A14 towards the substation after the work was done and thinking the substation looked different, and I was right! So when the substation was first built it had 6 L6 DTs. 3 BB, 2 BICC and one EVE. Now there’s only 2 left. 1 BICC and 1 BB. The BICC DT oddly feeds an L4M DT which then becomes a PL16 line. I have a photo of the new L12 DT/D90 being strung somewhere, I’ll find it and share it.

Gotta love the D90s!!! However the first on is strange though as it only appears to be acting as a D30. It’s the last tower on the line before the DT’s at Nursling substation iirc. I also have some photos of a D90 on the Bramford-Norwich line.
