sb67
Having finished with this end for a bit...……... I've now got to decide what to do here, my thoughts are a run down goods store either the ratio concrete provender or wills wooden goods shed but modelled in a semi used state with plenty of clutter and stuff lying around, maybe a shed or office there too. RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted September 2, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 2, 2019 Looking good, Steve. With regards to the 'gate' end, I would keep things low as I like the current open look that you have. How about a slightly over grown loading dock extending to the rear of the siding and up the viewing side, say 6 inches or so? Rob. 1

Steve. I was going to suggest the scale scenes goods store kit that was available for free download. But now I check the website, it seems to have been discontinued (scalescenes goods store R002 - Original title and part code). It seems right along the lines you're suggesting. RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted September 4, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 4, 2019 I like both but my preference would be the first one, I think the flat bed suits the scene more so than the van.....only in my opinion though 3

RMweb Premium PMP Posted September 4, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 4, 2019 I’d leave it open, let it ‘breathe’. Possibly a couple of stringy 4ft saplings growing from the wall to concrete join and a few scraps of rubbish. I’d leave it at that, for me it looks fine as original. 1
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted September 4, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 4, 2019 (edited) Given it's a wharf, I'd expect to see some marine salvage - anchors, chain, general boat paraphernalia plus a small office and a yard crane. sb67
I made a mock up of a larger goods platform but I'm thinking I prefer the smaller platform. I like the idea of leaving it but I think a small office wouldn't look too out of place. Or maybe the shell of an office disused. I'd like to try putting some saplings etc but not sure how to make that look convincing. Steve.

I agree regards the shed but I would place it as per the top picture though maybe the structure itself could be smaller or rotated 90°. I also like Paul 's suggestion of leaving it open. Perhaps combine the two. Ramshackle shed and overgrown open space? Rob
RMweb Premium PMP Posted September 4, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 4, 2019 (edited) I’ve attached three pics from Shelfie1 which may or may not help! An easy sapling fix, is a small section of sea foam and scatter material. This will give you a natural structure and volume for a young tree. The right hand side may need more height in it to give a more balanced presentation, a lightweight overhead crane like this Walthers kit will give height and volume, but retain the open feel which is working at the right hand side. I’ve mocked it up with a right angle travel (pic3) and the linear travel (pic2) as it is used on Shelfie1. sb67
Thanks, any pics of Shelfie are always inspirational. I'm liking the idea of an overgrown open space as I've never done much green stuff and that would be a challenge to get right. Steve. 1
jazzer
The rails set into to cobbles look very good especially round the points. That is something that’s usually difficult to make convincing in OO guage. How did you do it and with what materials

That's pics of another layout, Shelfie 1, well worth googling. On Pecketts Wharf I used card to bring the level up to just below rail height, the bits in the middle of the points are balsa. This was then covered in shellac to seal the card and then painted using various gloss enamel greys and talcum powder sieved on through an old sock. Hope that helps a bit. RMweb Premium PMP Posted September 5, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 5, 2019 @sb67 (and others) thank you for the kind comments re Shelfie1 If the cobblestone query was re Shelfie it’s a similar process to that Steve’s used on Pecketts Wharf. The cobblestone isn’t Wills stone sets aggressively sanded so they loose the rounded tops. Using card packing the level is set just below rail top level so the wheel tyre is always above the ‘scenery’. My infilled track is DAS modelling clay, again sanded flat and then painted with regular emulsion paint, adapted from a Chris Nevard technique. The other thing that’s working well with Pecketts is the colour balance, don’t lose that, it’s part of what holds the whole presentation together.
sb67
So an area of rough ground it is to be. I'm not sure how to achieve it so I'll have to look through my books and try and find some ideas to follow. I might create some uneven patches and paint the area a more browny grey colour and add a bit of texture in places. I could really do with finding a pic of what I want it to look like, any excuse for looking through my old magazines! Steve.
sb67
Just a quick update, I re painted the area and then added a mix some fine flock powders and static grass etc, I wasn't really happy as I thought I'd over did it a bit so I removed a bit of it, just got to get the paints out when it's all dry. I'm trying to get the look of a disused bit of land that for some reason did not get concreted with the rest of the wharf, is not too overgrown but weeds and debris are starting to take hold. Behind the hut I'm hoping to put some brambles, maybe some buddleia and a bit of junk. Steve.
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted September 18, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 18, 2019 As much as I liked the previous scene you laid out with the flatbed.................That is looking the business! Chris
sb67
Thanks Chris. It's not there yet, I'm trying to be a bit different with the way I model and wanted to find prototype photo's to work from but struggled with this bit, I kind of know how I want it to look but not 100% certain how to get it. Good fun trying though Steve.
