Volunteer Speaker sought on signalling and correct operation

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I hope I am permitted to post this request here.

I organise the London Area Group of the 3mm Society and this group meets 3 times a year on Saturdays at the MRC HQ near Kings Cross. For the past 3-4 years we have structured our meetings around specific skill areas such as computer drawing packages, DCC, chassis building etc. We usually get at least 12 members attending sometimes as many as 20. I'm asking the group for suggestions for next years meetings and one that has come up is how to operate layouts more realistically and to signal them properly. For that I need an expert who is willing to come and share their expertise more or less pro bono as our budget just about stretches to cover room hire. That obviously means someone who lives within easy reach of London.

If there is anyone out there who fancies an afternoon with a bunch of eager listeners, then please contact me either here or via the messaging feature

Thanks

Hi,

You might want to give a flavor of what era and region etc. that you would like to cover. I can do modern colour light stuff, but others would be far better to talk about semaphore signalling and operations.

You are right, they could well be two topics.

Regarding era, the Group would be most interested in steam and semaphores. Some model pre-Group and light railways but most are Big Four and early BR people.

I might well make myself available if you wish having been involved in (real) railway operation for quite a lot of years, dealt with all types of signalling system in use on BR, involved in writing Rules & Regulations, past expeience in lecturing and training people from zero knowl;edge upwards.

But it does depend very much on what period(s) you wish to cover and any specific areas.

Dave Larkin - although well known for wagons was a signalman all his working life and has recently been photographing every electric signal he can find. He gives talks to HMRS so likely to help. and he lives in South London. I'll let you have his email off line if you email me bartlett.paul@tiscali.co.uk

  • 4 weeks later...

Thank you to all the people who replied, and sorry for the month's silence, I had a family issue to sort out.

Our next meeting is end October and I will be firming up next year's agenda then.
