Rattlebrook railway

Recommended Posts

I am modelling Bridestowe station as the fictitional site of a preservation society. The Rattlebrook railway was a private siding connected at Bridestowe to bring peat from the moors. It closed in 1935. But during the last years of operation a converted lorry was used on tbe standard gauge private siding to carry the peat to Bridestowe instead of a horse drawn cart.

Can anyone give me an idea of the sort of lorry that would have been used and the conversion of the lorry.

Hi bill had a look on tinterweb bit on luck so far. Bearing in mind the lorry would most likely have been second hand I would go for a Leyland, guy, thorneycroft from 1910ish. Failing that an old steam lorry might be in keeping with the railway theme

All the best

There is a book called:- "Walking Dartmoor Railways or tramways". I'm not certain but I think there are a few photos of the Rattlebrook tramway in it.

Try ABE books, that should unearth a copy

Best of luck

Paul
