Martin S-C
The loco shed base piece with the inspection pit is a very nice bit of kit. Is it a commercial product?

Is it a commercial product? The inspection pit is a Peco product the shed base has been made by myself from scratch* using a combination of plasticard and foam board *Scratch is an excellent product, you can make anything out of it Edited June 10, 2019 by chuffinghell
Martin S-C
I have used Scratch myself a few times. Wonderful stuff. I'm surprised someone hasn't marketed it commercially. I think I shall avail myself of one of those Peco inspection pit sets, they look the business.

RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted June 12, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 12, 2019 (edited) I’m off work tomorrow and Friday in the hope that I’ll get some more done on the layout....as well as a few jobs around the house This evening I’ve attempted to paint/weather a stone wall from my Ratio engine shed kit I’m quite pleased with the results but wondered if it would pass RMWEB inspection untouched on the left, painted/weathered on the right....am I close? This one is unpainted and just weathered Personally I prefer this one as it’s darker it looks better on the base Had a play about with ballast too, this is fine weathered brown, I’m thinking of using extra fine around the engine shed to simulate a compacted surface and fine or medium for the track maybe? RMweb Gold lezz01 Posted June 13, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 13, 2019 The wall looks good mate. You could use a bit of colour variation maybe a few blue'er stones and some red or even pinkish one's as well and an overall grime over the top of it but on the whole it's a good effort. AlfaZagato
I'd almost say bring it darker. You should consider that you are 76 times closer to the model than you would be the real thing. Except on a clear, high noon, colors tend to wash out dark at a distance.
Martin S-C
I am not sure what effect you are going for, but my gut feeling would be to make the cracks between stones darker than the stone, not lighter because being recessed they are more likely to be in shadow. RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted June 15, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 15, 2019 I was fed up with wiring so I’ve had a play with the airbrush (well I’ve got to practice) I’m also going to ‘edge’ the ash pit but I’m undecided whether to go for this or this I quite like the row of edging blocks above more than the paving as the edging blocks look more subtle
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted June 15, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 15, 2019 (edited) Hmmmm Top or bottom, I can’t decide now as the paving looks quite good weathered, especially as it highlights the cracks and imperfections I only want to use one or the other Edited June 15, 2019 by chuffinghell
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted June 15, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 15, 2019 (edited) Right or wrong the decision has been made and glued in place I like it so that’s the main thing I’ve also started to modify the points, cutting down the sleepers around the tie bar and the tie bar itself Warren Branch is becoming a very grimy railway I hope @Rowsley17D doesn’t mind if I were to use his ash pile technique Edited June 15, 2019 by chuffinghell
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted June 15, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 15, 2019 Not at all, please do go ahead and use the idea. I am going to use similar for the coal heaps in the staithes and in the coaling stage when I get around to building it.

RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted June 15, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 15, 2019 (edited) I avoided it for as long as possible but all the track and points that have been laid so far have now been fully wired, every piece of track has been wired individually so I don’t have to worry about fishplates causing problems in the future ....what a ‘jail job’ Tomorrow I’ll be soldering droppers, modifying points and laying more track, hopefully I’ll run out of time so I don’t have to do anymore bl**dy wiring Edited June 15, 2019 by chuffinghell 3

Are you going to extend the boarded crossing to fill the gap between the shed and the pit?

I was thinking of just filling the gap with ballast, I’ll put some in dry to see how it looks. It never occurred to me to make the boards wider, I’ll have to try that too I did consider reducing the width of the boarding to allow more track to show Edited June 16, 2019 by chuffinghell

RMweb Gold Harlequin Posted June 16, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 16, 2019 Don't go too grimy. Remember that pre-war the railways took pride in their appearance. Very different to the post-war rundown state that is the current vogue.
