RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted September 29, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 29, 2019 I would leave them black Chuffers. Maybe flick a large soft brush over them to see if they will burnish. I have a few spanners that belonged to my Dad and they are probably in the region of 60+years old. All dark. Not a hint of chrome. Rob. 1

Thanks Rob I’m going to go with @Martin S-C‘s suggestion of dry brushing first Having used a blackening solution on the brass I think the brass would end up showing through being as heavy handed as I am Edited September 29, 2019 by chuffinghell

RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted September 30, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 30, 2019 (edited) I’ve purchased a couple of figures from Hardys Hobbies that I hope I can position in such a way that they look like they are working in the shed without having to alter them (I skill I’m yet to master) I’ve used ‘Fred’ as an example of what I’m thinking It has put the shed build back a little while I wait for them to arrive.... I’d be useless on the Great Model Railway Challenge, I work too damn slow Edited October 5, 2019 by chuffinghell 3
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted September 30, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 30, 2019 (edited) It’s about time ‘Fred’ did something useful I don’t think he looks too bad in there Edited September 30, 2019 by chuffinghell 13

I have to say that I disagree, when I first started working on cars and bought myself some AF and Whitworth spanner sets, they were mostly blackened, not shiny. RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted October 3, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 3, 2019 I’ve attempted to make a vice for the pillar drill using a Modelu slide jack as a starting point This is a first attempt and as the jacks come in pairs I can have another go tomorrow 5
