I’ve been wondering how to ‘mark’ the position of the magnets I’ve put in the track for the uncoupling (using the Brian Kirby method)

There is a thread started recently on this very subject.

Hope this helps,

Bill.

Thank you for pointing me in the direction of that thread Bill, some clever and interesting ideas

I particularly like the suggestion of a bird by @Butler Henderson I may use that elsewhere

Well this is the best I can do

Sarah says it look more realistic being a bit wonky but I think she’s just trying to make me feel better because she knows how particular I am

Wonky is fine, the real thing often was, with the passage of years. I think sometimes us modellers try to get things "too" correct. I have seen a number of photos where telephone poles lean at noticeable angles due to the shifting of the ground, often on or at the base of embankments. As long as things lean downslope, some wonkyness is good.

I’ve trimmed a ‘tree’ so it’s flat on the back (where it goes up against the wall)

and wondered about using the tree as a marker?

As an added bonus trimming the back of the tree has left me with more shrubbery

A bird on the fencepost would work as well.

Interestingly one of the posts happens to mark the first magnet position, I’d love to say it was planned that way but it is just luck so I’m wondering about a bird on that post.

A tree would be easier to see at a distance but being up against the wall the tree casts its shadow on the wall

So I’m still undecided

Bird, definitely.   Something bright, like a jay.

I’m hoping to find a ready painted item, I’m not sure I could paint something as small as a bird

Langley do a painted set

or Preiser maybe?

Al.

Yep, nice and unobtrusive that no-one but the operator will notice.

I suggested a bird on the fence post because I saw that one of the posts was in line with the magnet.

A painted set would be expensive. Surely you could paint a blackbird? :P

Yes I thought so

That’s very true

You’re quite right or maybe something more visible like a pigeon (from a distance is just grey) or a dove (either white or light grey)

As much as I appreciate everyone's input I'm still not 100% sure what to do

The bird on a fence post is without question a good idea but I'm still leaning towards planting a tree as a marker instead..........possibly because that is what I originally planned to do and I'm being stubborn?

I may have to flip a coin

Another thing to consider is can you see the correct spot if you're not in line (90 deg perpendicular to the track) with the magnet?

As I mentioned earlier, I use yellow spots. These allow me to look along the track to see if the bufferhead is correctly positioned (meaning the tail of the coupling is over the magnet).

A bird on a post might give the correct location, but only if you can see it from your operating position... ;)

That’s a really good point!

The final operation position is yet to be decided but there is a possibility that a bird on a post could be obscured by the engine shed

I could always drive really really slowly and listen out for the distinctive 'click' but that's not exactly reliable

Sorry guys  I’ve used rule #1 and opted for....

DE4FE2F4-06CD-4ACD-9CF9-F732C86118CE.jpeg.ddd75b9f651799dea15e97a72a61fed2.jpeg

I've tested it and it marks where the uncoupling magnets are without a problem even if I’m standing 4ft away

The ‘mess’ under the tree is this stuff

’forest ground cover’ I’ve only just put the glue on but once dry it looks like this

I like it (which is the main thing) but I’m sure the other ideas and suggestions will come in handy as there are magnets placed throughout the layout..... I can’t have trees growing on the platform now can I  but @Stubby47‘s yellow dot solution would be ideal :good_mini:

I think hares have longer bodies, physically larger and have longer ears but I know as much about rabbits as I do about railways....so very little
