Thanks @Nick C but having gone to the trouble of making sure the door and window fit correctly in the building I'd prefer for the front of the building to be in view

Maybe my only option.......I never thought a model railway would be so much hard work

I like this simpler version of Nick's idea, where the coal is just across from the siding.

Ah, just read your note about the hut.

Agreed this would be an ideal spot if it wasn't for the front of the building being out of sight

four options

1) adopt rule one and hope those who have made suggestions are not offended

2) finish the building and sell it on ebay

3) bin it

4) change hobby to something less complicated

I could look at putting another window in the side so at least there is a little more to see than a bare wall?

option 1, it's your railway after all!

I've been having a look at some old maps online to see what the GWR did (I'm not all that familiar with Swindon matters), and can't see any coal bins at any of the stations I've looked at - so either the GW didn't provide them, or the OS didn't bother to map them.

Or do what they did at Uxbridge.

I think your Coal Merchant's office is really great and I think using your skills to 'make' it in Tinkercad are just as valid as someone hacking plasticard to scratch-build one.

I really appreciate you taking the time to go into detail about where to place items and how you create them. Keep up the good work and don't listen to the nay-sayers, they are only hoping you'll get rid of it in their direction.

That's interesting, shows that the office doesn't actually need to be anywhere near the coal storage area - which makes sense, the office is the merchant's shop and advertising, so he wants it to be as visible as possible to anyone visiting the yard (especially where there are multiple merchants, so he wants to be more visible than his competitors!)

It isn't, until you involve other people!

Whose model is it? If you can justify something to yourself then go ahead.

Unless somebody else comes up with a better idea . . . . . . .

Just adopting rule #1 for the moment I’ve layed it out because I think seeing it in reality is better than plan views

I would go with this, but can you move it about 20-30mm to the left, as we look through the camera? It gives you more space with the wagons to the right of the coal yard, which makes it more useful for loading and unloading other misc stuff.

I’ve left the coal staithes where they are and moved the building to the left

Not quite what you suggested but gives a similar result?

I was thinking: like that but turn the hut 180°.  The front is visible and is approachable for customers.  The back would give an opportunity to add a little junk and weeds between the hut and the coal bins.

As it is though, the merchant can keep a eye on the local miscreants who might fancy a free helping...

They'd only turn up at night when the merchant had gone home.

A question - is there any reason the point is not where the l/h tracksetter is positioned ? The track leading to the point is effectively wasted, it can't be used to load/unload as a wagon parked there would block both other lines.

If the point was moved to the left you'd have longer sidings.

there was a point there but I removed it to give a larger yard area
