Stupid question, if I were to build it with the flat top painted as per the photo posted by @Harlequin would the top/lid be painted in light stone or dark stone as per the band at the top and bottom of the tank?

As someone who has operated the Minehead and Bewdley versions regularly, the square-top types have no lid and the water is exposed to the elements.  The columns at Minehead are having/have had new conical tops made by the in-house fabricator to combat the effects of seaguls on the quality of water in the loco boilers!

looks superb Kevin, was that built from the ratio kit? I only ask because that looks much better than I imagined the ratio kit would be

Appreciated, thank you. Very helpful

What jumped out at me straight away are the parts I’ve circled that have made all the difference

I’ve refined it slightly and decided to do them as separate parts

Loosely based on this:

And stealing @KNP’s way of doing it in the hope that Kevin sees it as imitation being the sincerest form of flattery

I've redesigned the drain to take the etched drain cover and as Kevin has with the slab extended if I decide to use the fire devil

Took a little trial and error get the aperture to print the correct size due to various factors involved with 3D printing like exposure times and shrinkage etc

If it looks half as good as Kevin’s when they are buried in the ballast I’ll be happy

Not a problem as I more than likely nicked it off somewhen back then

Ohh the advantages of 3d printers......

In my day, young lad, I had to use a hammer and chisel to carve it out of stone!!!!

Definitely many advantages over traditional modelling

Had I not got the printer I would have done the drain with strips of plasticard and the tower base with modelling clay or chamfered some MDF

I’m just getting lazy as I get older but at least I’m getting my money’s worth out of the printer

Certainly don’t make me build stuff any quicker though

Having painted the bits with Vallejo concrete 2:1 with very light grey I didn’t think the flat colour looked particularly realistic

so trying to copy this:

I used a sponge with white, followed by concrete, followed by black then a medium grey

hopefully look better once embedded in ballast following a coat of matt varnish?

I’m making it up as I go so any hits and tips would be appreciated

Looks fine to me Chris. It's not as light as the base in the photo but I guess that concrete is quite new compared with the scene you are making, so I would expect yours to be darker.

Done the same now with the drain slab, painted the inside black and the drain cover in railmatch ‘oily steel’ I over thinnned it by accident which has given it a kind of hammered effect which I quite like

for the post I’ve drilled a hole in some 2mm sq styrene bar and inserted a nickelsilver rod. I’ve done this for two reasons

1) locating it in the correct position

2) it will inevitably get knocked so the bar should keep it in place…maybe?

Just need to find or make some kind of hook for the chain

I love the concrete paint Chris.

Thanks Lez

I used a spare soldering iron sponge as it has quite a course texture

I imagine a natural sponge would give the same effect

I missed this one the other day, over by the turntable and up the line (a little), which does have a lid. The ‘fascinator’ - to prevent birds perching -must be a modern addition.

For me I cannot reconcile the bands of dark stone with period photos. It could have been a regional variation thing, as so many things were. We could have a whole separate discussion about window frames for example.

Why is part of the ‘arm’ painted black, anyone?
