Thank you

Have I interpreted correctly?

Chris

Very close, see on the right hand picture how the drive rope is crossed over. The crane is double geared via the handle and would have a self locking pawl. The crane in my picture is direct geared. Like you said, it's difficult to find a clear picture and many were pictured after being abandoned and no chain / wire rope at all.

Do you mean thus?....

I don't think that you have to go as far as adding the extra braces right along the whole of the building, although there is nothing wrong in that, just more work. Simply adding the braces to join up the points where the diagonal beams meet the cross beams (making 2 more triangles...) would be enough, I think - and it would make it look like the photo you posted. I note in that photo they were clever enough to use the wall plate beam on the far side to avoid the need for any extra timber there, but your building seems somewhat wider, so you won't be able to do that.

Interesting...source?

There's a prototype for everything, of course, and I'm sure I just haven't understood it correctly, but several things about that image don't quite ring true (foul lead off the 'high gear' being prime, particularly as it leads to load being taken anti-clockwise*; 'low gear' pulley unreaved with it being unclear how it would be set up; two different sizes of handle... I assume the fault lies with my understanding but I'm always up for an unscheduled learning opportunity :) )

*not unheard of by any means, just unusual and has relevance for the cable (wire rope or fibre) whose lay must** match.

**usual caveats

Anyway, Chris that latest one is how you'd model it at 12":1' - go for it! Top stuff as ever, I'm so jealous of your drawing chops - when are you going to start taking commissions?!

Blimey, you sound like my A level geography teacher.

"You have not quoted your source material Mr Kitts-Wolf... C minus!" :D

The cad drawings of the cranes are pinched from the internet. I was attempting to show how the large pulley might come into the equation.

What I was trying to explain was either from Five Hundred and Seven Mechanical Movements by Henry T Brown or from Modern Engines and Power Generators (1912 & reprints) E Rankin Kennedy.

Not being able to crib pages out of those I had to make do with what I could find on the net.

(They're right, 98% of it is porn... Maybe only 2% of us are happy?)

Plus it's taking no on an hour of attempts to upload any pictures on here at present, something to do with 4G.

So I hope that this scribble makes sense of the likely drive system and of a variable gearing like that on a car / boat trailer.

Finally!

Hahaha not at all - I always thought source material was for those who lacked imagination, and the citing of them for those who lacked conviction :)

I just wondered if them image come from one of those Historic Englad pdfs etc. There's so much good information out there but Google seems determined to ignore it!

For do reason, I can't seem to download those Historic England pictures. Slightly irritating.

The idea I was trying to get across about how much swing the crane jib would have being at least halfway across the track was based on an official drawing of Walton on Thames LSWR goods shed, that I am also struggling to upload! :banghead:

I imagine you guys are finding this quite boring now,

Not at all, it is good see see the plans evolve and come to fruition.

V12 looks spot on.

FINALLY I can give you a crane plan and building layout. Walton on Thames LSWR

So hopefully you see just how right version 12 definitely is!

It all looks very convincing. I think it is because you have brought together all of the features that you wanted, based on prototype information and assembled it with the same kind of form follows function logic that the Victorians would have applied.

Are you planning to sell a kidney and get it 3D printed?

Having purchase a Peco yard crane I was going to use the circular base that comes with the kit but as it was too big in diameter I decided to draw my own...same design but smaller overall diameter

Done as a separate part so I can use it to build the crane and in theory just drop the assembled crane in place

Neat job. That reminds me that I need to make a new base for the crane I have. I have a photo somewhere and it looks pretty easy to fabricate. I hope that you're not fitting an anti aircraft gun on that mount as it's going to be close to the bridges....

Now there’s an idea!

looking at it do you think I should perhaps do the ring in larger ‘stone’ blocks or keep it as brick?
