Chris Very close, see on the right hand picture how the drive rope is crossed over. The crane is double geared via the handle and would have a self locking pawl. The crane in my picture is direct geared. I don't think that you have to go as far as adding the extra braces right along the whole of the building, although there is nothing wrong in that, just more work. Simply adding the braces to join up the points where the diagonal beams meet the cross beams (making 2 more triangles...) would be enough, I think - and it would make it look like the photo you posted. I note in that photo they were clever enough to use the wall plate beam on the far side to avoid the need for any extra timber there, but your building seems somewhat wider, so you won't be able to do that. I was attempting to show how the large pulley might come into the equation. What I was trying to explain was either from Five Hundred and Seven Mechanical Movements by Henry T Brown or from Modern Engines and Power Generators (1912 & reprints) E Rankin Kennedy. Not being able to crib pages out of those I had to make do with what I could find on the net. (They're right, 98% of it is porn... Maybe only 2% of us are happy?) Plus it's taking no on an hour of attempts to upload any pictures on here at present, something to do with 4G. So I hope that this scribble makes sense of the likely drive system and of a variable gearing like that on a car / boat trailer. Finally!
