Scottish Region class 08's Green Livery 1970?

 Share

Recommended Posts

A web search drew a blank; there are allocation list and generic livery threads etc but those didn't contain the specific info I am looking for. Likewise my book collection has not been much help!

I have only seen 1 online photo of a green 08 at Eastfield in 1968; there must be others out there?

As per the title, can anyone direct me to links/photos of any 08's still in BR service in BR green livery c.1970, particularly on Scottish Region (better still around Glasgow)? For that matter links to photos in BR blue with D numbering in the same area welcome too!

Thanks in advance.

Martyn.

Hi I took this photo at Carlisle Kimgmoor depot (close to Scotland) in 1973 of D3170 still in green with early emblem.

Hi, many thanks for sharing your photo, not everyday you see an 0-4-0 class 08!! Very unusual to see an early crest by that stage I would have thought?

Here is one at Ferryhill, 1973 or 74,IIR, though not entirely in green!

Brilliant thanks Richard! If it wasn't for the late crest it would be hard to judge what the underlying colour is; black, green, blue??!

Must be post March '74 with having a TOPS number, very freshly applied on a BR blue patch by the look of it.

Excellent!

Keep them coming folks!

I've picked a fairly late date to give some flexibility with dates, but these are my observations for 24/2/73. Regrettably I wasn't identifying which loco's had D prefixes by then, but I would think it would be fairly safe to assume that most didn't have one.

Cadder Yard. 3284. 3418.

Eastfield shed. 3384. 3545. 3921. 3728.

Polmadie shed. 3297. 3733.

It will be about then, Term finished early June,IIR, and exams took priority just before that so could well be  March or April. Thee was a flurry of TOPSing going on at Ferryhill then, with streams of wagons coming and going to get their new ID's. I took some colour shots of these, and have posted them up here about six years ago, but can't find where  just now. If I come across it I'll post a link....

Edit - having looked at the photos again, it was giving them metric weights, somewhat ad hoc, as can be seen.

This is all good info, many thanks for the replies thus far, keep them coming please! It seems then that BR green livery was still fairly common across the 08 fleet around 1970 just as it was with many of the main line classes.

Nothing from the Scot-Rail Group, but WNXX came up with this link showing which 08s made it to TOPS numbering still in green livery, just need to work out which were Scottish Locomotives http://web.archive.org/web/20160423123153/http://www.railblue.com/rail_blue_history_2.htm  I thought that Railblue had gone to the great website graveyard but the wayback machine has saved at least some of it.

Brilliant Jim, missed that site, might just be what I need if I can find a suitable 1970 allocation list to cross reference, many thanks!

and I think the second one is in green also - Grangemouth.

Thanks, another Inverness one here, 08505 (ex D3660) still green in 1974:

Not a class 08 but a nice little green class 06 at Eastfield 1972 D2413

Another one south of the border - 08437 Leeds 12th August 1977 snatched from a moving train via instamatic - hence questionable quality!

Thanks for sharing those pics, more good information there, particularly in regards to weathering!

If I get around to doing an 06 in green 64B, that is a likely contender!

Billy A's 08 photo is of interest particularly as it demonstrates that at least one green 08 received yellow bufferbeams vice red. I have a photo of a 31 taken at almost exactly the same spot about 5 years later somewhere!

Sorry Mike, somehow missed your reply! Very useful info thanks, I will delve into those locos further. I agree that the 'D' prefix is a minefield around this time for sure. 3733 is one I have already picked up on as it was new to Edinburgh around 1959 I believe, and ended its days at Eastfield where it was withdrawn as 08566 following a fire in 1975, so only ran with TOPS numbers for just over 12 months; link on Flickr after the fire and following withdrawal.

Further to Mike's observations above, a quick image search yielded little. Only D3384 in BR blue (with the 'D', suggesting an early repaint into blue), and this one of 08227 (former D3297) again in blue, at Eastfield:
