A bit more - the presflo project!  In progress, basic chassis and body with lead ballast (scrap lead flashing, obtained from local builder in exchange for a bottle of alcoholic refreshment).

And ready for primer.  Ignoring an impressive amount of flash, considering this kit dates from 1961 it was a very satisfying build.  A few small bits of filler needed on the body and in the sole bar/end floor unit joints, but nothing major.

Looks really good. A daft question on the Presflo kits can the poster board be left off

Absolutely, there’s just two small holes in the body side to fill if you do so.

EDIT - Having looked at photos, there’s also some plumbing that’s hidden by the boards that unsurprisingly is missing on the kit, so you might want to add that as well.  But all the strengthening ribs are present and correct under the boards.

And a little bit more, first up the fish van got gently weathered (dark wash and dry brushing with Verminlord Hide (Games Workshop)) and is now back in service.

The presflow got a coat of white primer, having bitten the bullet and decided to go for the yellow livery (just got to match the yellow used to something airbrushable)

Finally the postie delivered another batch of figures from Hardy’s Hobbies, the usual excellent quality and highly recommended.

The latest progress, another coach has joined the fleet.  This older mainline RB(R?) was unearthed in the attic, so was examined and due to being a rather nice set of mouldings (certainly considering its vintage) it got breathed on.  The effect on the blue and grey is an experiment with more games workshop paints, Imrik and Hoeth blue, with Terminatus stone (have I said before that I love the GW names for paints?) drybrushed over the bodysides.  The dirt is then provided with Mig’s dark, track, light rust  and engine grime washes.

708ABDC4-BE7F-4CF7-B4D2-54FE684C544E.jpeg.a2cca35bff9b9f62bc6278b1c86d1282.jpeg

However, I’ve also been consorting with the military modelling mob and was introduced to the use of watercolour pencils in weathering.  Simply rub on, then streaking effects are achieved with a damp brush.  So care of hobbycraft, here’s a selection of pencils.

and the results, both rust and algae, nicely subtle as well.  Rather taken with this.

Once the weathering was done, kadees were fitted (with Bachman NEM pockets)

and finally it poses with the rest of the spare tatty rake.  Who hasn’t seen or ridden in coaches in this state on a preserved line?

Another update, with an increase in the layout population.  The Hardy’s figures seen above, plus some whitemetal figures of unknown origin (nicely sculpted, a bit cartoon-like in proportions, but nice enough) have been primed and painted.

And in position (along with a hound or two, care of Noch and a fundraising stall, care of Woodland Scenics)

The next batch arrived (ModelU, slightly crisper detail than Hardy’s, but dearer, so you pays your money and all that).  The accordion player is planned for a scene in the goods shed.  Just need an audience and a couple of accompanists on the most noble of instruments, the Mendoza (and if you know what one of those is, you should be able to guess who’s playing the accordion).

A quick update, figures and wagons.  Other irons in other fires have been demanding my attention, but it’s some progress.  A start’s been made on the ModelU figures, with the Vallejo acrylics I use for skin tones.  My technique (such as it is) is use the basic skin tone as a base, adding dabs of the dark or light flesh colours to get some variation.

9942298F-A40C-40AF-9D32-250129B45573.jpeg.fcd3c4188334f8399dbd2492bbb0be79.jpeg

Next up - wagons.  The 24t tippler got its interior weathered with the usual games workshop products and the exterior lightly weathered with the watercolour pencils seen above.

7600769F-6903-48E3-88A4-2027E3E36C94.jpeg.7fca3834ff247ca69de7eb71bbfb118c.jpeg

Then pads from scrap styrene were added and no.5 kadees fitted.

This then lead to the pair of 16t minerals getting breathed on, with their wheels being swapped for the correct 3 hole discs they should have.  Weathering is the pencils again and the remains of the factory weathering, after it’s been attacked with a fibreglass brush.

Finally, two loads for the macaw and the warwell emerged from a scrapbox.  First up this boiler (aparently its a GEM (they still going?) kit, sold as a loco type stationary boiler.  With the firebox sides altered to a more railway loco profile, it got a good rusting and becomes one of those projects found on every preserved railway.

The macaw gets a spare C&L crossing, with cosmetic chairs added.

Another update, on the control front.  A while ago I enquired what the current approach of choice was for a decoder programming interface.  The answer came back a SPROG and the JMRI software on a suitable laptop.  However, this lead to realising the then laptop needed an upgrade (this was complicated by an extra need for it to cope with CAD software).  So I approached my tame computer wrangler and suitable was ordered.  Then due to an absolute comedy of errors, starting with the supplier having a backlog of orders due to a shortage of processors, followed by Christmas, followed by Chinese New Year, followed by this virus, meant that a machine ordered in November finally arrived this week.  Anyway, with the new machine sorted, a SPROG plus suitable power supply was ordered from Digitrains and a jury rig was built on the bench to test it (power feed to that bit of track is via two croc clips out of shot).

5551A3BC-5708-4227-8D1D-3CA76D6F13AA.jpeg.d47eb7073d66635c54b4cca68788e7c7.jpeg

I’m very pleased, it makes decoder tweaking a lot more straightforward, so the next stage is a proper testbed track, including a  servicing cradle and a setup for the rolling road rollers.  Stay tuned for more...

And as promised, here’s my version of Rugby test plant in miniature.  First up the old testbed had the redundant P4 track removed, replaced with OO and was shortened.  Two lengths of ally angle were added to the edges to pull a bend out and strengthen it.

F285C8D7-B4B7-4013-A14D-E11417D26561.jpeg.31e87f0f0d4a31e973beef42a20a7d4a.jpeg

Then a churnk of scrap ally (hence the superfluous holes) was fitted as a mounting for the SPROG (attached with cable ties).  The toggle switch above it switches the tracks between DCC and DC, provided by the 30 year old gaugemaster.  The second track feed on that is connected to two wander leads with croc clips, for testing chassis and wheel cleaning.  The rollers are Direct Train Spares and the block adjacent is for when something such as a DMU with an unpowered bogie or a tender loco where there’s issues in detaching the tender comes in, so the unpowered bits can sit on there.

Right, following the latest hiatus, we’re back!  A wide variety of distractions, including recommissioning a CNC mill, more respite care and emptying a shared shed so it can be demolished as the opening act of the neighbours kitchen extension caused the delay this time.

Anyway, the current job is 350 shunters, two of.    Both Bachmann, one in sectorisation grey which was fitted with a Hornby decoder.  That’s been introduced to the SPROG and after a prolonged tussle, seems to be capable of smooth slow speed running.

The second is in BR blue, cunningly hidden under a layer of ‘interesting’ weathering.  So first up, remove the crud with cotton wool buds and white spirit.

After

Next, an identity.  I needed a vac only machine that could have survived into preservation.  I also wanted something with a connection to the NW.  Following some googling, 08 715 emerged as a candidate, ending up at Carlisle Currock in 2004 as the last vac only 08 and surviving in use as the depot pilot until 2007.  Due to visits from the copper and bronze fairies, it ended up going for scrap.  At this point, I discovered it was a Stratford engine previously and with the discovery that a friend and colleague of mine who’s an ex Stratford driver drove it 18 times when he was there, it was decided.  So history was rewritten, she was rescued from Carlisle, entered preservation and lost the orange livery for a repaint into BR blue.  Just like this.

And a bit more on the gronk frount.  An order’s gone in with Railtec for transfers (found the thread on here whilst browsing, so decided to give them a go).  It’s also been stripped and the chassis prepped for fitting a decoder with the removal of that random PCB and it’s support posts.

2D48C77C-184B-4BAD-B342-7191AA2D5D16.jpeg.86a568335a23b5e1651a8c36dfd172f5.jpeg

Then a Zimo MX600R decoder is hardwired in and the whole shebang introduced to the SPROG.  Addressed, roster entry in JMRI created and the top speed knocked back slightly, it has a hour or so on the rollers.

Onto the body.  The first stage is to go through and remove any surplus warning lights and remove the electrification flashes that are in the wrong locations.  In this and the removal of the weathering the wasp stripes have suffered, so these were retouched.  Also the surplus holes in the nose for the radiator ladders were filled.

Transfers have (after damned impressive service from Railtec) arrived!  Yes, I do know 08’s don’t have destination blinds and I’ve got unprototypical plans for two of those sparrows and the class 15 (that sheet was bought for the depot codes).  But the rest (well, some of it) is for the gronk.

A start’s been made on the gronk.  Very taken with Railtec transfers, minimal carrier film, good adhesion, no silvering.  However, don’t do what I did and sail in blythly with a bottle of decal setting solution in hand.  They don’t need it and react in a similar way to a slug dosed with salt.  So, as always, read the instructions first, where you’re told not to use such horrible things!  Highly recommended and their customer service is A1.

And a bit more with the gronk!  The cab detail has been picked out, Stratford’s details added to the livery and a driver (modified Hornby) added.

A start has been made on the last transfers, that’s one side done (another Charlie Dore original in the background).

Finally, the next projects have arrived.  I need to educate myself on the details of GWR gunpowder vans...

And a bit more!  The gronk has now had the other side done, just needs varnish, the weathering touching up and some last touches, like that grab handle straightening.

The latest batch of figures (all ModelU) have been painted, just need shading and finishing.

Finally, another new toy.  Following several discoveries (the effect on the electric bill of running the big compressor, the distant Dubdubdub in the background and that it causes television interference) I decided to splash out on something a bit quieter to drive the airbrush and supply light compressed air needs in the garage.  So machine mart obliged and this rolled up.  Quieter than a fridge, cheap to run, easily movable and well made.  What’s not to like?

A bit more progress, another batch of ModelU figures have emerged.

The next project has been started, Southern Railway design CCT from the parkside kit.  There’s dozens of these survived, so this is going to be a riding van for the crane, in BR crimson.  First up, the basic body and chassis are assembled on a surface plate and left with clamps and weight to ensure it all dries square.

Some lead is added

And finished, in grey primer ready for paint.  The roof will be fitted after the sides have been painted and th glazing added.

I’ll maintain a diplomatic silence there.  The clothes are actually a joke with a mate, he saw that figure in grey primer as I was doing the flesh tones and asked if it was Dr. Evil.  Second from the right’s got a film influence as well.

A couple more projects have popped up, first a souvenir from a bank holiday weekend visit to the Chasewater railway (never been before, lovely line with an interesting selection of ex. NCB stuff, modified/rebuilt 16 tonners and tipplers.

9DE8D8BA-8B89-43DF-AA22-00367FA1FCD7.jpeg.3536c0092ed825f0aae022c03c4e8ef8.jpeg

It was a good price in their ship, so I did another bit of economic stimulation.  Lovely little thing, but it needs a chip fitting.

A3C73FCD-C121-46E7-BBFF-CE075056DDF7.jpeg.62702a1b8b0adee590edcdd93c772be6.jpeg

So it’s been stripped down, idea is a Zimo MX616R (which according to the net is 8mm square) fitted under the floor of the trolley.  Modify/remove the PCB to get the connections and give us a bit of space.

Another project is the GWR gunpowder van, being finished in the 1936-48 livery.  So it’s half built up, currently sat on the surface plate whilst the sole bars dry.

And a second very quick update, the gunpowder van has been finished in Vallejo’s Anthracite grey (an eyeballed match for GWR wagon grey) with the airbrush, as a bit more practice and it, along with the presflo have had their transfers (Fox and original Dapol, which considering theyve sat in a packet for 20 years went down perfectly) on one side.

And to continue, they’ve now had their transfers finished on both sides and on the ends (in the case of the gunpowder van).

Next, the CCT has been given 3 coats of Vallejo red with the airbrush (the jury is still out on how close a match to BR crimson this is, it’s darker than it looks in the photo, but it still looks a bit pinker than ideal).  It’s still got to get a coat of varnish and weathered, so I’ll see how it goes.  It’s also had 1 side’s worth of transfers applied, these came with the kit and I’ll admit to being disappointed with them, my memory is modelmaster used to be printed better than this (looking at the CCT marking, for a start).  The style and location of the lettering is based on a restored example on the Mid-Hants.

Finally, the last of the current batch of wagons, a steel medfit and an unexpected 21t open, which was found in the bottom of the kit drawer.   Finished and ready for primer.

A bit more playing with paint colours, following a bit of research, here’s an attempt to match BR unfitted grey and fitted bauxite to Vallejo colours (71.046 Pale Blue Grey and 70.982 Cavalry Brown)  The 21t has also had the first stage of the internal rust added.

Also, just like the 12”-1’ version, a restoration project.  This meat van was built about 25-30 years ago, I’ve decided to sympathetically restore it.  So it’ll be keeping the livery and transfers, with the missing doors being replaced with a spare set from a park side kit.

And a bit more on the wagon fleet!  The stuff that was fully transferred has been varnished, as an experiment I’ve got a bottle of Mig’s ‘lucky’ varnish, water based, air brushes on easily and dries Matt first go (so already beating the humbrol I used last time).

The results, irritatingly despite decal setting  solution the transfers on the CCT (which I already wasn’t very impressed with the printing of) have also silvered, unlike the Fox efforts on the gunpowder van and the ancient Dapol transfers on the presflo, so those are probably being replaced at some point.

The 21t (god knows how an early one of these survived into preservation, maybe it’s ex NCB or Workington steelworks?) (having researched, it’s getting a couple of the chivers clasp braked versions to run as a short rake) and the medfit (which is going to end up as a maintenance wagon, carrying a cement mixer and other stuff) have has their transfers (unknown and fox) added.

And another wagon has emerged, a second 21t mineral, this time the vac fitted clasp brake version, from the Chivers Finelines kit (sold under the Five79 tag).

A new manufacturer for me, I saw the thread on here and based on the good feedback, decided they were worth a pop.  Following damned impressive service (delivery in under 24 hours!) and a kit that wasn’t quite at ‘shake the bag and a completed wagon falls out’ (but it certainly wasn’t very far off), with lovely crisp mouldings and superb instructions (Peco, you fancy redoing the parkside instructions to this standard?).  I’m very glad I did.  Highly recomended, I’m struggling not to justify a third 21 tonner in the rake and I’m watching the range to see what else is released.

And in the spray booth, following a coat of grey primer.  Plan is finished in early bauxite (the arm is entirely homemade, using 1/2” aluminium bar, steel strip and mouse balls for the pivots)

And a bit more.  First up, the Chivers 21t mineral has received its bauxite finish (actually Vallejo’s cavalry brown, airbrushed).

Next up, I was after some of the red panda kits BR 10ft  clasp braked under frames and google lead me to the website of H&A models.  What should have been just two underframes grew a bit and with the excellent service I received I came away very happy (highly recommended, I’ll go back there again).

So, first out of the pile was the Cambrian sturgeon.  Assembly has been straightforward so far, with the basic wagon weighted upside down on the surface plate, to ensure it dried flat and true.

With its bogies fitted, following a filling and sanding session on the deck.

The parkside 21t mineral has had Kadees fitted and a start made on the weathering (aiming for a bit more tatty).

Finally, on the subject of weathering, I’ve picked a couple of issues of this up.  Aimed at the military modeller, there’s the odd railway article and a hell of a lot of inspiration /new techniques.  Although published by Mig, it isn’t used solely as a vehicle to advertise their products (just make sure it’s the English edition you’ve got).
