DMU Photography - Away from the Three-Quarter View

Recommended Posts

An offering from the Eastern region. Friday 17th June, Greater Anglia class 755 leaving Wroxham bound for Sheringham. Seen from the footpath that runs alongside the Bure Valley Railway.

So, how many cars are there in that unit: 1, 3 or 4?

It's a 3 car unit. The guts of the engine is a separate unit in it self, with a corridor to pass through.

It's a multiple choice question!

1 - it's an inseparable articulated unit

3 - three passenger cars

3½ - three long'uns and a short

4 - three passenger cars and a non-passenger non-driving motor

Stadler's data sheet on it (PDF) has the wheel arrangement as Bo'2'2'2'Bo', describing it as a 3-car unit:

So even the builder is confused.

Perfect Trevor!  Landscape doesn't have to mean "in the country"; this is an unmistakably urban landscape.

These shots remind me of the credits to "Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads", with the DMU passing in the middle distance.

Some DMUs from the 1970s and 1980s in urban landscapes, crossing the High Level Bridge over the Tyne.

I think I might get away with it, they are so far away you can't read the numbers. (This was mentioned as a necessity for this type of picture a page or two back!)

What’s the “odd” centre car? It looks a bit like a class 110 (or whatever class number the centre coaches were allocated at that time), but what would that be doing in Heaton 101 set?

Hi, brushman47544. That TSL is a class 108 car. You can tell what it is from the big saloon windows, which are lower down than on other classes of unit, and the shell vents on the roof, which also spaced differently from a class 101 unit. The toilet filler pipe is different too. I hope this is of some help.

Best regards,

 Rob.

A couple from 24th August 2020.

A TransPennine Express at Colne Bridge with 2J58, a local service from Leeds to Huddersfield.

Looking across to the Calder Valley line, a Northern Trains class 158 heads east (to the right in this view) towards Heaton Lodge East Junction with 2I09, a service from Wigan Wallgate to Leeds.
