A couple of years ago I was on the platform end visible at the top of the picture and wondering just how the view from the hill above the tunnel would look. I will definitely return one day to take a similar shot to yours, I'd be very pleased with that one. In addition to the coal drops there were additional tracks serving a now disused but still extant platform and further lines with a junction that headed off to the right towards North Bridge. Tree and vegetation growth hasn't helped since I took that shot 5 years ago, so I don't know how clear the view is these days. I'll check next time I'm in Halifax - I'm there reasonably often. I did wonder about including a Google Streetview reference with my original post in case it might be of general interest; Southowram Bank, Halifax 1
Popular Post Trev52A
A couple more 'urban landscape with a train too far away to identify'-type shots: Photographed from near Felling in 1977, a Newcastle to Sunderland DMU passes the Tyneside Central Freight Depot in Gateshead. This was opened in 1963 and closed ten years after this picture was taken. I think the train is travelling from left to right in this 1976 view of the River Wear, so it is approaching Sunderland from the Newcastle direction. I bet this scene has changed a bit! Trev52A
A South Shields to Newcastle DMU passes St. Simon's Church, South Shields in 1979. This is the site of today's Simonside metro station. Just had a thought - 'St. Simon' would be a good name for a racehorse and an A3, wouldn't it? RMweb Gold Popular Post 4630 Posted October 6, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 6, 2020 A Northern Rail class 158 crossing Ribblehead Viaduct on 30th September 2015 - crossing twice as it happens, once as 2H85 Carlisle to Leeds and once as 2H88 Leeds to Carlisle. For those curious about the livery - it was applied by Northern Rail to 158849 the previous year to promote the use of rail services to see the Tour De France which had stages in Yorkshire on 5th and 6th July 2014.

RMweb Gold 4630 Posted December 8, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 8, 2020 (edited) Ordinarily I wouldn't have posted these images as they show the unit number, with the urban and tree lined Calder Valley landscape at Brighouse being less of a feature on this occasion. In this case though I'll claim a small mitigating factor - it's now over four and a half years since the Northern Rail franchise ended (31st March 2016) and 158791 is now one of only two class 158s that retain the debranded livery of that former operator. The other remaining 158, I understand, is 158861 and as it's allocated to Heaton is unlikely to venture along the Calder Valley. 158791 at Brighouse on 7th December 2020 working 2I09, 10.37 Manchester Victoria - Leeds.
