One of the units involved in the Salisbury accident, late last year, is now back in service. Here it waits to leave Westbury with the Swindon shuttle.

I really like these last two Peter, both excellent shots of "The Railway at Work", in which the primary subject is a DMU.  To better reflect this sort of entry, I've updated the thread title.  Otherwise nothing's changed in the "ground rules"; the aim remains to avoid 3/4 views where the train is more than a small proportion of the image.

Oh look, I'm at Westbury again!
As today's 1657 Paignton - Padd was cancelled, the following 1715 Plymouth - Padd was diverted to call at Westbury rather than pass on the avoiding line. Here 800018 (minus front cowling) + 800019 arrive to pick-up a decent load of passengers. For the number crunchers, the DMUs in the sidings beyond are 166203 and 158769.

From a recently-discovered set of negs, a strange beast trundles into view beside Colthrop signal box in (I think) late 1987.

210002 on a local service from Newbury or Bedwyn.

DMU versus EMUs

I reckon the 350 would be leading up to about 70mph then the Pendolino would just stroll past, just like the 165/166s used to out-accelerate a HST out of Reading.  By about 60mph the HST had caught them and was accelerating harder than up to 30mph.

I’ve increasingly become a fan of DMUs (especially 1st generation ones) over the years and I think it’s because they represent the mundane day to day stuff that we only realise has disappeared years later.

This thread is excellent and I’ve worked my through the whole thing now.

My offerings this evening (for what it’s worth) are:

Red Cow crossing, Exeter (a fairly recent but never to be repeated scene).

A moment captured at Alton. A bit fuzzy but I liked it:

On the East Lancs at the 2017 DMU gala:

Good boy Thumper action!
