Andy Y
Please don't. I'm saying that in my capacity of a layout photographer and it looks awful; over-sized boulders. Why spoil a layout to save a few pennies. Get some decent quality ground material.

Thanks Andy for the reply i was curious about using this stuff but I will keep well away from Bird grit and use the right stuff for ballast.
iak
It also means letting the budgie out of its cage is rather risky to the p-way...
34theletterbetweenB&D
In fairness, back in the day it was a standard method. It was necessary to first sieve it through a pretty fine mesh and chuck away the 70% oversize lumps to get something suited to OO in scale size terms; and then you ended up with typically well rounded sand grains, which isn't what ballast is really like at all.
