Sublime - both images and printing.

Just a quick look through my copy and I can now understand why you were prepared to spend 'however long it takes' getting the production right - well done!

The best things are worth waiting for. I fully understand the frustrations suffered by both David and Colin, as no publisher wishes to send out a sub-standard book for the simple reason that it reflects badly on the publisher, even though it's the printer that actually prints it! Anyway,it's here now and I think we can all agree that David made the correct decision to delay publication, rather than release something on time, but of low print quality.

Picked up a copy during the SVR diesel gala, and there aren't suitable superlatives to describe how good this work is.  After the MNA's 'Never Again' box set, I feel completely spoiled!

And likewise picked mine up at the same place yesterday. As 'Chard says is in the same league as Never Again.... two stunning works covering a very evocative period in railway history

I love CTG’s work and was given a copy of Each a Glimpse by my late wife in the 70s.

Two questions:

1) does Transition Include previously published pictures?

2) where can I buy it? I’ve searched Amazon and Googled the web but there’s no sign of it.

Help, please!

to answer

there are 270 new images in the book

Kidderminster Railway Museum have published it . The best place to get it is from them directly as it benefits the museum . . Email krm@krm.org.uk although give David a few days as his laptop died last week and I know he is sorting this out. There are a few retailers who may stock it but I don't expect it to be on Amazon . The print run is also limited so don't leave it too long

I haven't spotted any shot that has appeared in a previous book. A great book and the quality of reproduction is a definite step up from what was achieved by Ian Allan in each a glimpse....and ever again (printed in China) - I would just like to see Decline of Steam redone in the same manner as each a glimpse.... with printing of the same quality as Transition.

Correction - plate 215 was used in Steam Finale North but with the dmu on the left omitted so that it was not immediately obvious to me that I had seen it before. Incidentally, I have always considered this book to be the least satisfactory offering from CTG, probably because the portrait format (almost de rigour at the time for railway photographic albums) doesn't give the space to do justice to the shots.

Copies were on sale at Railex this weekend.

Railex, what a fantastic show that has just been. Wild Swan/Titfield had a few for sale, with more ordered, and Bill Hudson Books had (and has) the book too.

The book itself is absolutely stunning, superbly well put together and beautifully printed. At £30.00 it is a bargain and will sell its print run with no problem, I think.

It isn't going to be available in "lots of bookshops" and apart from buying direct might I suggest that folk contact James at Bill Hudson Books to order their copies. I have it too, but with Wild Swan to play with selling lots of this book is probably less important for my survival than it is for James.

If specialist outlets aren't supported then they will simply cease to exist.

A further five sold this morning which according to my fag packet calculation leaves only five remaining.

On the strength of the reviews I bought a copy from Bill Hudson Books, which arrived this morning.

A stunning book.  Great images and the effort made to get the reproduction spot on during printing has certainly paid off.

A super modelling reference too to get those little modelling details right on layouts set in the 'Transition era' of the 1960s.

I followed Simon's magnanimous suggestion and my copy arrived from Hudson's this morning. But I'm sure Simon's copies won't remain long on his shelves.

The sharpness and clarity of the reproduction is astounding. There isn't a picture that doesn't demand close and repeated study. There are some that just knock your socks off; like No.26, the panorama of Doncaster that expresses the prodigious scale and scope of the steam age railway, and No.246 - six discarded 8Fs at Rose Grove standing as if on the edge of a precipice gazing into eternity.

And a few amazing scoops: No.129 with a London tube train passing through Weybridge, presumably in transit to the Isle of Wight; and Colin had the luck to catch it with a Battle of Britain passing in the opposite direction.

Nos. 109 and 110, which show Okehampton and Tiverton respectively each with three trains (Hymek+BoB+2-6-4T in the first) and seeming momentarily as busy as Clapham Junction.

And it's  worth noting that  I bought  And Gone Forever in 1994 for £25. Twenty-five years later the price of Transition is just five pounds more.

I too ordered a copy from Bill Hudson Books (thanks to Simon) which arrived on Thursday. Only had the chance for a quick look through but from what I've seen so far it is superb and well worth the money.

I've just been scrutinising No.4 (Crewe South). Isn't that 71000 Duke of Gloucester peeping out of the shed?

Finally found time to sit down and have a quick scan through my copy.

Somebody up thread asked if any of the photographs included had been published before. So far I've noticed prints 26, 41, 140 & 167 that have appeared in print previously but it was over fifty years ago. Although originally printed with virtually the same crop this in no way detracts from the book with the print quality being so high.

The photographic reproduction is on every bit as good and probably better than photographic books I have from the likes of Robert Mapplethorpe, David Bailey, Elliot Erwitt, Magnum Photos etc. and these cost considerably more when bought over a few decades ago. For me Transitions front cover photo taken from under Newport Bridge along with the rear jacket photo was worth the purchase price alone.

I suspect that the hardest thing about publishing this book was not getting the print quality right but in deciding which photos were to be left out.

Transition has gone straight to the number one slot on my bookshelf.
